Jose Aldo Bio

José Aldo is a retired Brazilian mixed martial artist from Manaus, Brazil, whose career centered on the UFC and World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight divisions. He trained at Nova União and became known for explosive striking, powerful leg kicks, fast counterattacks and strong takedown defense. Aldo made his professional debut on August 10, 2004, and entered the WEC in 2008.

Aldo won the WEC featherweight championship in November 2009 and became the first UFC featherweight champion after the UFC absorbed the WEC in 2010. He defended the UFC title against notable challengers including Mark Hominick, Kenny Florian, Chad Mendes, Frankie Edgar, Chan Sung Jung and Ricardo Lamas. He later won the interim UFC featherweight championship by defeating Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 in July 2016.

Aldo also competed in the UFC bantamweight division and returned to the UFC in 2024 after a period away from competition. His final UFC bout was a decision loss to Aiemann Zahabi at UFC 315 on May 10, 2025. He subsequently confirmed his retirement from combat sports. Aldo was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame’s Modern Wing as part of the Class of 2023, cementing his status as one of the defining featherweights in MMA history.
