Petr Yan is a Russian professional mixed martial artist and kickboxer. He currently competes in the bantamweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He is the current UFC bantamweight champion, having held the title since March 2021.
Yan was born in Omsk, Russia on April 7, 1993 and began training in combat sports as a young teenager. His first experience with MMA came at the age of sixteen when he trained at his local gym. After a few years of training, he competed in his first amateur fight at 21 years old. In 2012, he joined the AKA Thailand gym and began to compete professionally, taking part in both MMA and kickboxing bouts across Europe.
In 2017, Yan signed with the UFC and made his debut at UFC Fight Night: Cerrone vs Till on October 21st of that year. Throughout his time with the promotion, Yan has gone undefeated with a perfect record of 15 – 0 – 0; including wins over perennial contenders such as Urijah Faber and Cody Garbrandt.
Most recently, Petr Yan won his first UFC title by defeating José Aldo via fifth-round technical knockout to become the undisputed bantamweight champion. The victory earned him Performance of The Night honors as well as Fighter Of The Year for 2020 from multiple outlets such as ESPN & Sports Illustrated.
As one of MMA’s brightest stars today, Petr Yan continues to prove why he is one of the best fighters in all of mixed martial arts. With impressive victories over top contenders like Urijah Faber and Cody Garbrandt cementing his place among MMA’s elite, Petr Yan has positioned himself as one of UFC’s most formidable champions for years to come
