Alexander Volkanovski is an Australian professional mixed martial artist and a former professional rugby player. He currently competes in the featherweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Volkanovski was born on March 19, 1988 in Shellharbour, New South Wales, Australia. Growing up he excelled at both sports and academics. After high school he attended the University of Wollongong where he studied Exercise Science. While there, Volkanovski began to train in MMA under coach Chris Adams.
In 2010 Volkanovski decided to pursue his career full-time and left college to focus on MMA training full time along with wrestling classes that his trainer provided him with. In 2013 after amassing an impressive amateur record of 11 wins 1 loss, Alexander made his professional debut in which he defeated Ben Jones via submission due to strikes 1:05 into round one by TKO making it clear early on that Alexander meant business as far as fighting goes.
Since then Volkanovski has continued to work his way up through the ranks exhibiting strong showings against Mike Godbeer (TKO), Yusuke Kasuya(Unanimous Decision Win)& Jeremy Kennedy (Split decision win). His ever evolving fight style combined with superior conditioning & strength showcased during title fights vs Chad Mendes( KO win) & Max Holloway(unanimous decision win) gave rise to him being crowned UFC Featherweight Champion at UFC 245 on December 14th 2019 by unanimous decision over Max Holloway for whom many considered as one of the greatest pound for pound fighters in history thus cementing himself as a top fighter within 7 years since turning pro . Since then Alexander has defended this title twice against Brian Ortega(Decision Win ) & most recently Calvin Katter (Knockout Win ).
As one can clearly see from above ,Volakonvski’s rise from humble beginnings has been nothing short of astonishing . From now on , we can only expect more great performances from him going forward . With no signs of slowing down anytime soon ,Alexander sits atop the featherweight rankings looking for anyone who feels brave enough step into octagon and test themselves against arguably one of the most feared fighters out there today.
