Charles Oliveira is a professional mixed martial artist and Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner who competes in the lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Born on October 17, 1989 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Oliveira has been involved with MMA since his teens and began competing professionally at just 16 years old.
Oliveira made his UFC debut in 2010 against Darren Elkins. Although he lost this fight by unanimous decision, it marked the beginning of a successful career for Oliveira that spanned over six years and dozens of fights. During this time period, he earned eight post-fight bonuses from the UFC for his exciting performances inside the Octagon. He also won multiple titles including Jungle Fight Lightweight Champion and Shooto Welterweight Champion before joining the UFC roster full-time in 2016.
Since then, Oliveira established himself as one of the top lightweights in MMA today by compiling an impressive 14–4 record fighting for both Bellator MMA and UFC events. In total, he has 18 submission victories to date which rank him third all-time behind Royce Gracie (19) and Frank Mir (20). His most notable wins include those over Clay Guida at UFC 225 (2018), Jim Miller at UFN 135: Shevchenko vs Carmouche 2 (2019), Kevin Lee at UFN 164: Blaydes vs Dos Santos (2020) ,and two wins over Anthony Pettis – firstly during TUF 26 Finale: Eubanks vs Modafferi (2017) and secondly during UFN 95: Blachowicz vs Jacare 2(2020).
In addition to his many accomplishments inside the cage, Charles Oliveira was recently awarded “Submission Artist of The Decade” honor by FloCombat after going 10–0 between 2011-2016 while winning seven submissions out of ten fights overall within that timespan .
