Jones then went on to play college basketball for Duke University, where he won an NCAA Championship with his team after his freshman year. During this time, Jones also earned numerous awards including ACC Tournament MVP and Second Team All-ACC honors. After two successful years at Duke, Jones declared for the 2015 NBA Draft but withdrew from it before teams could select him and returned to school for one more season.

In June of 2016, Jones officially declared for the draft again and was selected 24th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers who then traded him to the Minnesota Timberwolves shortly after he was drafted. In 2017-2018 season Tyus started 73 games as point guard with Wolves averaging 10 points per game 4 assists per game while shooting 39% from 3 point range helping lead them into playoffs that season until they were eventually eliminated in 5 games against Houston Rockets during first round of playoffs . Following 2018–2019 season Tyus re-signed with Timberwolves but upon arrival of new head coach Ryan Saunders he saw decreased playing time going into 2019–2020 being pushed out from starting lineup completely .
