McLaughlin played college football at Illinois, joining the program as a walk-on in 2014 and later becoming a prominent specialist. In 2018, he won the Bakken-Andersen Big Ten Kicker of the Year award and earned first-team All-Big Ten recognition. Illinois also recognized him for his long-range kicking ability and consistency on extra points.
McLaughlin entered the NFL in 2019 as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills.
