Alex Anzalone, born on September 22, 1994, in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, is a professional football player of Italian heritage. As a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL), he’s currently associated with the Detroit Lions. His journey to professional football began in college where he made a mark in the athletic community playing for the Florida Gators.
Anzalone’s collegiate football career ran from 2013 to 2016, where he cultivated and sharpened his football skills. It was at Florida where he laid the groundwork that would later catapult him into the NFL. Despite the challenges and tribulations he encountered throughout his college career, Anzalone’s performances consistently showcased his potential and promise, attracting the attention of scouts across the league.
His hard work and skills during his college years didn’t go unnoticed. The New Orleans Saints recognized his talents and potential, and in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft, they selected him as the 76th pick overall, making him the tenth linebacker chosen that year. On June 2nd of the same year, Anzalone secured a four-year contract with the Saints valued at $3.46 million, including a signing bonus of $864,592. This was the beginning of Anzalone’s journey within the NFL.
Anzalone’s rookie year with the Saints saw him earn a starting position as an outside linebacker. He started in all four games in which he played, further intensifying his presence in the football field. Unfortunately, his season was cut short when, in Week 4 against the Dolphins, he incurred a shoulder injury that led to his placement on injured reserve on October 4, 2017.
The 2018 season witnessed a healthy and ready Anzalone who played in all 16 games. However, luck would not hold out as once again, he was placed on injured reserve following another injury on September 16, 2019. Despite these setbacks, Anzalone remained resilient.
The NFL offseason in 2021 brought about a significant change in Anzalone’s career trajectory. On March 24, he signed with the Detroit Lions, securing his position in the top roster and entering the 2021 season as a starting linebacker. Despite sustaining another shoulder injury in Week 15 that led to his placement on injured reserve, his impactful performances had cemented his role with the Lions.
In 2022, Anzalone decided to continue with the Lions, re-signing with the club. The following year, in 2023, he entered into another contract extension spanning three years and amounting to $18.75 million. His dedication and hard work were recognized in his third season with the Lions, reflecting in his selection as a 2024 NFL Pro Bowl Alternate.
