Akiem Hicks Bio

Akiem Jamar Hicks, best known as a dominant force on the football field, was born on November 16, 1989, in the bustling town of Sacramento, California. Hicks spent his younger years in Elk Grove, a suburb of Sacramento, swapping between family homes and finding solace in the grueling and grounding world of American football.

Hicks attended Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks, California, where he first showcased his innate athletic potential. Following high school, he decided to attend Sacramento City College where he garnered significant attention for his relentless talent and indomitable will.

In 2008, after the football season, Hicks emerged as a top junior college player, earning an offer to play for Louisiana State University (LSU). However, due to recruiting violations by LSU, he was barred from playing in the 2009 season. This setback left the promising athlete in a difficult place. Moving to Colorado Springs, he found work in a DirecTV call center while contemplating his next steps. Despite receiving an offer to play in the Canadian Football League, Hicks chose to further his education and pursue his football career at the University of Regina in Canada, where he enrolled with the Regina Rams.

In his debut season at Regina, Hicks was named the Canada West Universities Athletic Association’s top lineman after recording 42 tackles and 6 1⁄2 sacks. His impressive performances caught the eye of the United Football League, and he was selected by the Omaha Nighthawks. However, believing in his potential and his commitment to his education, he decided to remain at Regina.

In 2012, his efforts were rewarded when he was selected in the third round of the NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints, becoming the ninth Canadian Interuniversity Sport player to be drafted into the NFL. As a rookie, he played 14 games, achieving 20 tackles, a pass defended, and a forced fumble. For the following two years, he continued to demonstrate his prowess with the Saints, making 43 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2013 and 42 tackles, two sacks, and two passes defended in 2014.

Hicks later found himself wearing the New England Patriots jersey, having been traded for the tight end, Michael Hoomanawanui, in September 2015. He marked his tenure with the Patriots, scoring a touchdown in their 33–16 win against the Tennessee Titans and finished the 2015 season with a total of 24 tackles from 16 games.

In 2016, Hicks joined the Chicago Bears under a two-year contract. His debut against the Houston Texans saw him record three tackles and a forced fumble. Throughout the season, he consistently proved his worth, achieving a career-high seven sacks. In recognition of his contributions, the Bears offered Hicks a four-year, $48 million contract extension in 2017.

Despite facing a mild setback in the form of a knee injury in 2019, Hicks showed resilience and determination as he returned to the field against the Green Bay Packers, recording the first sack of the season on Aaron Rodgers. He then went on to recover a fumble forced by Khalil Mack in a game against the Washington Redskins before exiting due to an elbow injury, which later led to him being placed on injured reserve.

He made a victorious return from injury in 2020, especially impressing in a win against the Detroit Lions. Despite juggling injuries throughout his 2021 season, his performances remained formidable – he recorded multiple sacks and continually proved his defensive prowess on the field.

Hicks’s journey took another turn on June 2, 2022, when he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, his season came to a sudden halt due to a torn plantar fascia sustained in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.

Throughout his career, Hicks has been renowned for his resilience, determination, and unparalleled skill on the football field. His journey from a dire situation in Colorado Springs to the elite professional ranks of the NFL is a testimony of his fight, focus, and faith in his abilities. Currently, as a free agent and still holding immense talent, Akiem Jamar Hicks’s story in the NFL is far from over.
