Mouhamed Gueye

Mouhamed Gueye has followed an inspiring career path through the realms of professional basketball. His journey began in his birthplace, Dakar, Senegal, where he was born on Nov. 9, 2002. As the youngest of four children in a sports-oriented family, Gueye grew up in an environment where athleticism was encouraged. He initially displayed an affinity for soccer but later transitioned to basketball due to his tall height. His enthusiasm for the sport was fueled by the influence of his older brother and the legacy of his family members who have represented the nation in basketball and participated in the European leagues.

At 16, Gueye decided to test his aptitude for basketball on a larger scale and moved to the United States. There, he was enrolled in Prolific Prep Academy in Napa, California, through the recommendations of his personal basketball coach, Mamadou Cisse, who introduced him to the head coach of the academy, Philippe Doherty.

Despite being a novice to organized basketball structure, Gueye quickly adapted to the game’s sophistication and complexities. His performance at Prolific Prep demonstrated promise, and he soon emerged as a four-star recruit among the top 50 in the country. With his early completion of academic requirements, Gueye reclassified to the class of 2021 and elected to play for the Washington State Cougars, overlooking several other high-tier offers.

In his first season with the Cougars, Gueye averaged 7.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game, earning him a spot on the Pac-12 all-freshman team. His exceptional performance intrigued several NBA teams, leading him to declare for the NBA draft in 2022. However, after evaluating the feedback of the professional teams, he chose to withdraw from the draft and considered a transfer. Eventually, he reunited with the Cougars for his sophomore season.

The shift in the Cougars’ team during the 2022-23 season placed Gueye in the spotlight. He emerged as the offensive orchestrator and was recognized as an integral component of the squad. Aside from playing as a center, diverging from his innate power forward position, he set a new personal record by scoring 31 points against the USC Trojans in February 2023. With an average of 14.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game during the season, Gueye earned a spot on the All-Pac-12 first-team.

April of 2023 marked another milestone for Gueye, as he declared for the NBA Draft and was invited to participate in the NBA Draft Combine. His draft night started with being selected as the 39th overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets. However, the Boston Celtics, and later the Atlanta Hawks, subsequently traded his rights.

His journey with the Hawks commenced with his rookie contract signing in July 2023. Unfortunately, he encountered a setback in November that year when a right low back stress fracture put him on the sidelines. As a result, he missed out on a major part of his debut season. Gueye made his comeback through the Hawks’ G League affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks, where he averaged 8.3 points and 5.3 rebounds across four games.
