Larry Donnell Nance Jr., an American top-tier basketball player, was born on January 1, 1993. Currently playing for the National Basketball Association’s (NBA’s) New Orleans Pelicans, Nance has solidified his reputation as a formidable force on the court in an athletic career that spans several pivotal periods in teams like Wyoming Cowboys, Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Portland Trail Blazers.

Before making a name in the NBA, Nance was a young athlete at Revere High School, in Akron, Ohio. Over time, he developed physically, and complimented his growth with a passion for basketball. By his senior year, he was 6’7”, towering over most people. In fact, his excellent stats of averaging 18.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game as a senior propelled him to the limelight where recruiters took notice.

Taking his game to the next level, Nance attended the University of Wyoming, where he played four seasons of college basketball for the Wyoming Cowboys. There, his consistent performance, which included averaging 11.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks in 123 games, cemented him as a dominant big man. Most notably, his outstanding role in leading the 2014–15 team to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2002 made him a hot prospect in the NBA Draft of 2015.

Plucked up 27th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2015 NBA draft, Nance marked a new chapter of his career. As part of the team’s roster rebuild strategy focusing on younger players, he was ready to contribute to the Lakers’ future. Later on, he found himself amidst a center of controversy regarding a 2012 tweet about teammate Kobe Bryant’s infamous rape incident, but his apology and Bryant’s “water under the bridge” response allowed the dust to settle.

During the 2017–18 season, Nance found himself traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Here, his talent continued to shine, even leading him to play in the 2018 NBA Finals. As the tides of NBA trade flowed, he found himself moving to the Portland Trail Blazers in 2021 offseason, only to be dealt to the New Orleans Pelicans midway through the 2021–22 season.

Nance’s basketball success didn’t emerge from a vacuum. His father, Larry Nance Sr., was an NBA star and three-time All-Star who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns. Following his father’s footsteps, Nance Jr. went on to participate in the 2018 Slam Dunk Contest, finishing second with an incredible dunk that mirrored his father’s.

However, the journey hasn’t all been about bouncing balls and scoring points. At 16, Nance was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, and he’s had to maneuver his growing career amidst managing the condition. Despite this, he remains committed to the game and continues to inspire many with his resilience and unwavering determination.

Nance’s siblings, Casey and Pete, have also had their experiences with basketball. Casey played for NCAA Division I Dayton Flyers, while Pete once was part of Northwestern’s roster before transferring to the North Carolina Tar Heels.

When he’s not on the court, Nance follows his love for soccer, showing support for Leeds United. In 2018, he decided to take his love for the game return a step further by becoming a part owner, joining forces with the 49ers Enterprises, the San Francisco 49ers’ investment arm.

In between the buzzers and career milestones, Nance found love. He tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Hailey Pince, in 2018, marking yet another chapter of his life. Even in a busy career, Nance is a testament to the fact that success in sports and personal life can coexist, inspiring many as a role-model basketball player.
