Fairfax Harrison was born on March 13, 1869, in a world that was just seeing the dawn of the new era of rail transportation. He grew up to be a significant contributor to this domain, harnessing his skills as an American lawyer and entrepreneur in the service of the Southern Railway Company.

Completing his law studies, Harrison embarked on his professional journey in the year 1896 as an attorney for the Southern Railway Company. His acumen and dedication became evident quickly, and by 1906, he had risen through the ranks to become the company’s vice-president of finance. From this vantage point, his impressive leadership qualities caught the eye of the company’s shareholders, and in 1913, Fairfax Harrison was elected president of the Southern Railway Company.

He implemented a plan to upgrade the locomotive stock by introducing more powerful engines. Additionally, he worked relentlessly to increase Southern’s railroad track length and expand the area serviced by the railway, reflecting a forward-thinking mindset that remains a hallmark of successful business leaders.

The Great Depression presented a significant challenge, and the railway business teetered on the edge of financial ruin for a while. Notwithstanding, Harrison was not one to surrender. Despite the bleak economic conditions, he strived to keep the company afloat. His perseverance paid off, and by 1936, the Southern Railway Company had regained its profitability.

After guiding the Southern Railway through years of growth, expansion, war, and depression, Harrison decided to retire in 1937. His commitment to the growth of the company and the railway industry as a whole remained unparalleled until his death just three months later on February 2, 1938.
