Usman began his career when he was still a child, training with his father at a local gym. After graduating from high school, he attended college at The University of Nebraska at Kearney where he played football as well as continued to train and compete in mixed martial arts. After graduating college with a degree in criminal justice, Usman joined an MMA camp in Colorado Springs and quickly established himself as one of the best fighters around. In 2013, Usman chose to sign with the UFC after being undefeated with 12 wins and no losses.
In June 2019 Kamaru Usman became UFC Welterweight Champion after defeating Tyron Woodley via unanimous decision at UFC 235.
