Kamaru Usman Bio

Kamaru Usman, known as “The Nigerian Nightmare,” is an active UFC middleweight as of September 11, 2026. Born in Auchi, Nigeria, he turned professional in 2012, made his UFC debut on July 12, 2015, and won The Ultimate Fighter 21. Usman most recently competed at middleweight against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC Fight Night in Oklahoma City on July 18, 2026, where he lost a unanimous decision.

Before MMA, Usman was an accomplished collegiate wrestler at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he captured the 2010 NCAA Division II national title at 174 pounds. He became UFC welterweight champion by defeating Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 on March 2, 2019, becoming the first African-born UFC champion. His title reign included successful defenses against Colby Covington, Gilbert Burns and Jorge Masvidal before Leon Edwards took the championship in August 2022. Usman’s style is rooted in freestyle wrestling, pressure in the clinch and an increasingly confident striking game.
