Murphy-Bunting developed his love of football in his youth, honing his skills and discipline at Chippewa Valley High School. His impressive performances caught the attention of scouts, leading to an opportunity to play college football for the Central Michigan Chippewas. Over three seasons, he transformed himself into one of the team’s most significant players, starting his sophomore and junior seasons. His sophomore season marked his breakout, concluding with an impressive record of five interceptions, finishing second in the Mid-American Conference (MAC).

Continuing his diligent pursuit of excellence, as a junior, Murphy-Bunting scored major accomplishments, recording thirty-seven tackles and two interceptions. His exceptional performance earned him the prestigious first team All-MAC0 honor. Having earned a solid reputation in college football, he decided to forego his final year of eligibility to enter the esteemed 2019 NFL Draft.

Murphy-Bunting’s professional career took off when he was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round as the 39th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. His first significant game in the NFL was in Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints, where he caught his first career interception off Teddy Bridgewater. He staved off potential opponents’ scores in subsequent victories against the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Detroit Lions.

As the season progressed, his performance began to climax. During Week 16, against the Houston Texans, Murphy-Bunting executed his first career sack on Deshaun Watson, causing a fumble. His rookie season was remarkable, rounding off with forty-four tackles, one sack, eight pass deflections, three interceptions, one interception return touchdown, and a forced fumble.

His success didn’t go unnoticed, earning him a place on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. In the following year, he continued to amaze fans and fellow players alike with his skill and determination on the field. During Week 8, in a game against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football, Murphy-Bunting recorded his first season interception, contributing to the team’s 25-23 victory.

During the Wild Card Round of the playoffs against the Washington Football Team, Murphy-Bunting gained an interception, signaling the start of an incredible playoff run. He became the first player to secure an interception in his first three career playoff games since Hall of Famer Ed Reed. Murphy-Bunting’s consistent performances played a crucial role in advancing the Buccaneers to Super Bowl LV, where they clinched a resounding victory against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Despite a minor setback in 2021, when he was placed on injured reserve due to a dislocated elbow, Murphy-Bunting rebounded and returned to the field, stronger and more determined. Over the course of the 2021 and 2022 seasons, he made significant contributions, playing and starting numerous games, making numerous tackles, interceptions, and forced fumbles.

By March 2023, Murphy-Bunting opted for a fresh start, signing a one-year contract with the Tennessee Titans. He broke new ground being the first Titans player to don the #0, a change allowed in the 2023 season. He continued his impressive run, starting 14 games, and recording 57 tackles, eight passes defensed, and two interceptions.

In 2024, looking for new challenges and opportunities, Murphy-Bunting signed a three-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals.
