The tale of Malcolm Koonce’s journey into the world of professional football is an intriguing one that shapes his biography. Koonce, born on June 6, 1998, set his footsteps on the football field as a defensive end for the reputed Las Vegas Raiders, an esteemed franchise in the National Football League (NFL). The sports-star humbly began his journey from the quaint Peekskill based in Northern Westchester County, New York.

Fascinatingly, during his early years at Archbishop Stepinac High School, Koonce was initially invested in the game of rugby. But destiny had different plans for him. His inclination towards football sprouted during the high school years, primarily instigated by the idea that it could pave his path towards a college scholarship.

Koonce indeed fructified these aspirations in 2015 when he helmed his high school team, Stepinac, to secure the grand New York State Catholic High School Athletic Association championship. After his triumphant high school years, he proceeded for a post-graduation tenure at the Milford Academy, located in New Berlin, New York.

Koonce’s college football career distinctly marks his four seasons with the Buffalo Bulls. Beginning as a backup during the initial two seasons, he soon clinched his way to become a prominent member of the team. His potential was thoroughly recognized when he was named first-team All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) after he recorded 34 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and nine sacks in his junior season.

Notably, Koonce was commemorated with the title of Defensive MVP of the 2019 Bahamas Bowl after a rigorous two-sack performance against the Charlotte 49ers. He continued his streak as a first-team All-MAC selection in his senior year, recording 30 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and five sacks in a season shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. His exceptional performance earned him the privilege to become the fourth UB player invited to participate in the Senior Bowl.

Entering the realm of professional football, Koonce was selected by the Las Vegas Raiders in the third round, being the 79th overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft. This was a critical juncture as the Raiders had received the 79th pick in a trade involving Rodney Hudson being dispatched to the Arizona Cardinals.

Although his professional journey began with a lack of on-field appearances, Koonce’s debut on December 5, highlighted his talent. With just seven plays on defense and four on special teams, he recorded a sack against Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke.

Progressing on his career trajectory, the year 2023 orchestrated by interim head coach Antonio Pierce was a breakout year for Koonce. Playing alongside Maxx Crosby on the Raiders defensive line, Koonce encountered remarkable success. By week 14 against the Minnesota Vikings, he nearly doubled his playing time, underlining his growing prominence in the team.

Arguably, his peak performance came during a Christmas Day divisional match against Kansas City Chiefs. With the Raiders’ playoff hopes hanging in the balance, Koonce’s unrelenting pursuit of Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes, culminating in a record of career highs in pressures and sacks, was instrumental in ensuring their victory.

However, in September 2024, an unfortunate knee injury placed Koonce on injured reserve. Announced on September 20, this injury abruptly ended Koonce’s season, pausing his promising professional journey.
