Mac McCain III's Biography

Franklin “Mac” McCain III, born on February 6, 1998, is a well-acclaimed and talented American professional football cornerback. Currently, he operates as a free agent. McCain originated from Greensboro, North Carolina, and was enrolled at James B. Dudley High School. During his high school years, McCain showed impressive performance with 96 solid tackles spread out in his last two seasons with the team, which led to his earning all-area honorable mention honors as a senior.

Upon graduation, McCain was fortuitous to secure a scholarship offer in 2017 from North Carolina A&T, a respected university known for its competitive athletic program. He started his freshman year with a bang. He not only began each of the 12 games that season but ended up making six interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns. His stellar performance in his third game was instrumental in North Carolina A&T’s 35-31 upset victory over Charlotte, where he snatched a game-winning “pick six.” McCain was lauded for returning an interception 100 yards for a touchdown against Morgan State the following week. His notable achievement as placing second on the team with 50 tackles and ranking eighth in the nation for interceptions per game carved his name in the sporting history of North Carolina.

Mac McCain’s second year in university saw him starting all eight games before tragically suffering a season-ending knee injury. Despite this setback, he finished the season with an impressive record – 37 tackles, two interceptions, and ten pass deflections, even though he missed the last four games. His unwavering performance led him to secure the first-team all Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) honors.

As a junior, McCain initiated nine games before succumbing to another season-ending injury. Nonetheless, he bravely soldiered on, rounding off the tournaments with 26 tackles and zero interceptions. However, the unfortunate cancellation of the 2020 football season due to the COVID-19 pandemic hindered McCain’s chance to display his sporting prowess.

McCain, who remained a free agent after the 2021 NFL draft, caught the attention of the Denver Broncos and successfully signed as an undrafted free agent. However, McCain was released in August, only to be engaged again in the practice squad. In September of the same year, the Philadelphia Eagles claimed McCain and signed him to the active roster.

McCain’s NFL career initiated in the third week, where he actively participated in 13 special teams snaps during their 21-41 loss against the Dallas Cowboys. The Eagles released him in November, and a day later, he was claimed off waivers by the Denver Broncos – only to be waived again by the end of the same month. The Eagles claimed McCain off waivers again shortly after, waived him in early December, but re-signed him to the practice squad later on in the same month. McCain embarked on 2022 by signing a reserve/future contract with the Eagles.

However, his association with the Eagles came to a halt once again in August 2022 when he was waived but re-signed to the practice squad. November saw another release and re-signing a week later. In 2023, McCain experienced a brief stint with the Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, and later the San Antonio Brahmas of the United Football League (UFL) in 2024.

Mac’s journey continued as he signed with the New Orleans Saints in June, even though he was waived in August. McCain boasts a notable lineage being the grandson of civil rights activist Franklin McCain.
