Avonte Michael Maddox is an American football defensive back for the Detroit Lions as of September 30, 2026. Listed at safety by the NFL, Maddox previously established himself as a versatile cornerback and nickel defender. He was born on March 31, 1996, in Detroit, Michigan, and stands 5 feet 9 inches tall.
Maddox played college football at the University of Pittsburgh, where he became a multi-year starter in the secondary and earned All-ACC recognition. The Philadelphia Eagles selected him in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft with the 125th overall pick. During his Eagles career, he handled roles at outside cornerback, slot cornerback and safety, demonstrating unusual positional flexibility for a defensive back.
