Josh Metellus's Biography

Joshua Metellus was born on January 21, 1998, in the USA and has built a successful career as an esteemed professional football player. In the cutthroat arena of the National Football League (NFL), Metellus has made a mark with his versatility and talent. He has carved his niche as a useful tool serving the Minnesota Vikings, where he is currently positioned as a safety player, proving his worth on the gridiron.

His journey into the world of football began in earnest when he joined the football program at Charles W. Flanagan High School. It was here where Joshua’s skill on the field turned heads, catching the attention of college recruiters. He made his first commitment to Georgia Southern, but the draw of Michigan University was strong. After attending an affiliate camp and with the support of his teammate at Flanagan, Devin Bush Jr., Joshua switched his commitment, becoming a Michigan Wolverine on June 17, 2015. He boasted several other offers from colleges such as Colorado, Florida International, and Middle Tennessee State, but it was Michigan’s allure that solidified his decision.

As a true freshman at Michigan, Joshua saw limited action, playing primarily in a backup role. Despite the limited field time during his sophomore season, his skills shone through during the three games he started. These performances earned him an honorable mention as an All-Big Ten selection. A versatile player, Metellus practiced at both free safety and strong safety positions, further mastering his skills during spring practices.

As he ascended within the roster, his senior year brought new responsibilities. He made notable contributions, both as an edge cover in the running game and a roaming safety in the passing game. His leadership on and off the field was recognized, culminating in being named a team captain in his final year. To cap it all off, he graced the field at the renowned 2020 Senior Bowl and also participated in the NFL Combine test of the same year.

The professional league awaited Metellus with open arms, and he was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft. Soon after, he experienced an initial setback when he was waived by the Vikings during the final roster cuts in September 2020. However, proving his resilience, he was signed to the team’s practice squad the very next day.

Metellus diligently honed his craft, paying his dues on the practice squad, before being promoted to the active roster in September. His unwavering dedication bore fruit when he made his first career start in Week 3 of the 2022 season against the Detroit Lions. His performances brought him into the spotlight, particularly when he recorded his first career interception off Jared Goff in the tense final moments of the fourth quarter, leading the Vikings to a 28-24 win.

With his talent on full display, Joshua was rewarded with a two-year contract extension with the Vikings in September 2023, solidifying his place in the team. During the 2023 season, he further impressed, showing remarkable flexibility under Coach Brian Flores’ defense. Joshua demonstrated his adaptability by playing in twelve different defensive positions up to Week 14, and it’s evident his football journey is far from over.
