Ben Ellefson

Benjamin Ellefson, born on September 1, 1996, is an acclaimed former tight end in the sport of American football. His career took him from the college stage at North Dakota State to the competitive professional arena of the National Football League (NFL), where he proudly donned the jerseys of both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Minnesota Vikings.

Ellefson’s journey towards the pinnacle of football began in North Dakota State, where the budding athlete flourished in the college’s football program. During his senior season, he made his prowess known by catching a commendable 15 passes for a total of 199 yards, also boasting five touchdowns under his belt. His skill set was not limited to receiving; he was also applauded for his impressive ability to block during running plays.

His time at North Dakota State culminated in a formidable college career record of 35 receptions spanning 463 yards and an astounding 16 touchdowns. This feat etched his name in the program’s history books, setting a new program record for the position of tight end.

In 2020, Ellefson set his sights on the esteemed NFL draft. Despite being overlooked by the draft, he was offered a place in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster. Nevertheless, he was released during the final roster pruning on September 5, 2020, only to be re-signed to the team’s practice squad a day later.

Before the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts, the Jaguars called Ellefson up to the active roster, where he continued to oscillate between the active and practice line-ups. This era of his career was marked by a brief placement on the practice squad/COVID-19 list on October 17, 2020. He was reinstated to the practice squad five days later and promoted to the active roster on the same day. However, an injury led to his placement on injured reserve on December 5.

On August 31, 2021, Ellefson faced another career hurdle as the Jaguars issued his release. However, fortune came knocking the very next day when the Minnesota Vikings claimed him off waivers.

Ellefson’s stint with the Vikings was marred by injuries. A knee and foot injury led to his placement on injured reserve on October 28, 2021. After an extensive recovery, he was finally reinstated on January 8, 2022. Though his return was regrettably short-lived, as an injury once again sidelined him on October 8, 2022. Just over a month later, on November 30, he was once again activated only to return to the injured list by December 7.

In a determined move to pursue new possibilities, Ellefson announced his retirement from professional football on June 1, 2023. However, his passion for the game remained unflagging. A mere five days after hanging up his cleats, he was welcomed into the Vikings’ coaching staff as an offensive assistant, morphing his relationship with the game from player to guide.
