Benton Whitley Bio
Benton Whitley, a National Football League player hailing from America, was born on February 12, 1999. He is currently a professional football linebacker for the New York Giants. Whitley started his football journey during his college years where he played for Holy Cross Crusaders. Blessed with outstanding skills and a tenacious attitude, he made essential contributions during his stay with the team for five seasons.
While at Holy Cross, Whitley’s skills continued to improve and shine, earning him the starting position during his junior year. Notably, he got an extra year of eligibility to play for the team in 2020, a benefit granted to college athletes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Embracing the opportunity, Whitley returned to Holy Cross for a fifth triumphant season.
Throughout his college career, Whitley showed an incredible defensive track record. In total, he made an impressive 111 tackles with 26.5 tackles for loss in his 42 game tenure. Most notably, he boasted a record of 15.5 sacks, demonstrating his capability as an eminent player in his position.
On April 30, 2022, Whitley’s career took a significant turn when he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Rams. However, this tenure was short-lived as he was waived in August the same year. Not losing his spirit, Whitley ended up joining the practice squad for the Rams the very next day.
Within a month from being waived by the Rams, Whitley found a new opportunity when he was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs’ active roster on September 21, 2022. His stint with the Chiefs was fleeting as he was waived the following October. Yet, his name remained as part of the Chiefs’ structure as he joined their practice squad just two days after being removed from the roster.
In a turnabout of events, the Minnesota Vikings signed Whitley off the Chiefs practice squad in October of 2022. However, after less than a month, the Vikings also opted to waive him. Nevertheless, the resilient Whitley found himself back on the practice squad for the Vikings later that same month and signed a reserve/future contract in mid-January of 2023.
Following another waiver in August 2023 by the Vikings, Whitley signed to the Vikings’ practice squad the next day. Shortly after, he was elevated to the active roster in September of the same year to appear in their week 1 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Innovember 2023, the New York Giants extended an opportunity to Whitley by signing him off the Vikings’ practice squad. His adventure with the Giants continued well into the following year when he received an offer for a 1-year extension on the contract. On March 15, 2024, the New York Giants validated their faith in Whitley by re-signing him on $985,000 contract. This milestone reiterates Whitley’s remarkable journey into professional football, encapsulating his spirit of resilience and unyielding talents in the gridiron.
