Andrew Van Ginkel

Born on 1st July 1995, Andrew Van Ginkel is an exemplar of determination and resilience in the realm of professional American football. Currently serving as a linebacker for the esteemed Minnesota Vikings fraternity of the National Football League (NFL), Van Ginkel’s inspiring journey charts itself from the modest beginning of a school-level player to becoming a drafted asset of the prestigious NFL.

His initial tryst with football began in Rock Valley, Iowa, where he attended the local community high school. He proved his mettle on the field as a quarterback for the Nighthawks, a consolidated team co-running with Boyden–Hull High School. Despite his potential, Van Ginkel remained largely unauthorized in major recruitment camps and remained an overlooked talent among large-scale schools after he completed his senior year.

Undeterred by his unacclaimed status, Van Ginkel initiated his college football career with the University of South Dakota, playing as a defensive end. Unfortunately, his maiden college season ended with his significant mentor, head coach Joe Glenn’s retirement, instigating his transfer to Iowa Western Community College. Maintaining his position as a defensive end, Van Ginkel’s journey continued from Iowa Western to the University of Wisconsin after a course of two seasons, where he found his vocation as a professional linebacker.

The turning point in Van Ginkel’s career came in the 2019 NFL draft when he was picked up in the fifth round by The Miami Dolphins, becoming the 151st designated player overall. His initial days with the Dolphins were harshly interrupted by an injury on September 6, 2019, which led to him being placed on injured reserve. Nevertheless, his comeback to practice within the team was marked on November 13, 2019, and a swift transition to becoming an active player again was made only a week later.

In a game against the Los Angeles Rams on November 1, 2020, Van Ginkel displayed an extraordinary performance by recovering a fumble lost by Jared Goff, returning it for a 78-yard touchdown amid the 28 – 17 victory. Remarkably, this became the second-longest fumble return in the Dolphins’ team’s history. Moreover, during a clash against the Denver Broncos in Week 11, he managed to force a fumble on the running back, Melvin Gordon, at the goal line, which was recovered by the Dolphins’ team, however the match resulted in a 20–13 loss for the Dolphins.

Sporting a passion that often illuminates through his demeanor on the field, Van Ginkel re-signed his contract with the Dolphins for another year on March 23, 2023. However, yet another injury put him on reserve on January 9, 2024. Not long after his recovery, on March 13, 2024, he signed a new two-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Establishing a formidable presence from the first game itself, he recorded a sack and an interception in the match against the New York Giants on September 8, aligning him alongside Kevin Williams and Harrison Smith as the third Vikings player to do so since 2000. Moreover, on this day, he scored a fortuitous touchdown after a 10-yard interception return from Giants quarterback Daniel Jones – a first for the Vikings since Week 2 of the 2021 season.
