BIOGRAPHY

Joseph Justyn Taylor, born on January 4, 1998, wears several hats as an American professional footballer, a running back and return specialist for the Houston Texans in the National Football League (NFL), and a professional esports player. His journey to professional football is a captivating tale stemming from his college football days at Arizona. Outside the gridiron, this dynamic athlete is part of Team Oxygen, showing his competence in the Rocket League esports arena.

Taylor was a product of Centennial High School in Corona, California, where he graduated in 2016. He initially played as a Defensive back before transitioning into a Running back role. His exceptional offensive skills merited him the prestigious Mr. Football title from CalHiSports.com, an award honoring California’s top offensive player. His performance also earned him a place on the All-Inland First-team and recognition as a Blue-Grey All-American.

In his senior year, Taylor made significant achievements, including garnering 2,290 yards and 44 touchdowns. Esteemed sports recruiting networks – Scout.com, Rivals.com, and 247 Sports – acknowledged his potential, rating him a three-star recruit. The young athlete had attractive offers from the Big Sky Conference schools, including Washington State, Nevada, Ohio, Montana State, Sacramento State, and Weber State, among others. Despite the myriad options, in 2015, Taylor firmly committed to Arizona.

Taylor’s stint at Arizona began with him featuring in four games. He proved his worth by rushing for 261 yards and adding two touchdowns on 38 carries, all the while barely playing in Arizona’s first match of the season against BYU. A two-game stretch saw him amass 267 yards on 37 carries with two touchdowns. This included a remarkable game in Arizona’s dominant victory over Hawaii in Week 3, pointing towards a bright future for Taylor. Unfortunately, an injury during the Wildcats’ fourth game against Washington truncated what was shaping up to be a breakout freshman season.

Despite the injury setback, Taylor emerged with numerous milestones under his name in the ensuing year. Playing in all 12 games, he became the Pac-12’s top freshman rusher with 828 yards (6.1 yards/carry). He averaged 69.0 yards per game, contributing five touchdowns. His career-best was rushing for 153 yards on 14 carries, achieving two touchdowns against Washington State. Taylor became a critical figure in Arizona’s ground game, which averaged 324.4 yards per game, ranked 3rd in the FBS. His impressive performance played a key role in setting the school’s single-season team record of 48 rushing touchdowns. Furthermore, Taylor had the distinction of being the Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year.

In July 2018, he was added to the Doak Walker Award watch list and celebrated another career highlight when he returned a kickoff for a touchdown in a game against Southern Utah. His redshirt sophomore year ended on a high note, recording 1,434 rushing yards, 49 receiving yards, and seven total touchdowns.

In 2019, even though Taylor, as a redshirted junior, achieved 721 rushing yards and five touchdowns, he decided not to return for his senior year. Instead, he announced his decision to enter the 2020 NFL draft on November 19, 2019.

Taylor joined the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2020. Despite initial hurdles, he climbed the ladder from the practice squad to the active roster by September 2020. His NFL career was flagged off with a debut against the Miami Dolphins in the Patriots’ Week One victory.

On October 24, 2021, Taylor had arguably his best game with the Patriots, rushing 21 yards with two touchdowns in a 54-13 win over the New York Jets. However, Taylor’s stint with the Patriots encountered some speed bumps.

He was waived by the Patriots on August 30, 2022, and subsequently signed to their practice squad. He tasted the active roster once again in November, before being waived and then re-signed to the practice squad. Taylor inked a reserve/future contract on January 10, 2023, only to be released in August.

In November 2023, Taylor transitioned to the Houston Texans’ practice squad, signing a reserve/future contract with the team on January 22, 2024. However, he was released by the Texans in August 2024 and re-signed to their practice squad.

Through this journey, Joseph Justyn Taylor has demonstrated his adaptability, resilience, and unwavering love for the game of football. His story continues steadily, offering both a testament to his talents and promise for the future.
