Antonio Gibson

Antonio Gibson, born June 23, 1998, is notably synonymous with being a top-performing American football player. Presently the coveted running back and return specialist for the New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL), Gibson has built up an impressive career through multiple achievements and recognitions in his stint as a professional football player.

His early life was spent in McDonough, Georgia, where he attended Eagle’s Landing High School. Excelling as a multi-talented sportsman, he played for the school’s football, basketball, and track teams, with his senior year culminating in being named the Henry Daily Herald’s offensive player of the year.

In 2016, Gibson embarked on his collegiate career at East Central Community College in Mississippi before transferring to the University of Memphis in 2018. During his two-year tenure at East Central, his statistics were sensational, encompassing 50 receptions, 871 receiving yards with 13 touchdowns, 27 kick returns, 554 kick-return yards, and 249 rushing yards.

Following his transfer to Memphis, Gibson continued to deliver astounding performances on the field, racking up 44 receptions for 834 yards, 10 touchdowns, 369 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and 647 return yards, all within a two-year period. His outstanding abilities were appreciated by the American Athletic Conference (AAC), earning him Special Teams Player of the Year in 2019. He notably became only the fourth player in conference history to be recognized at two positions, an achievement that speaks to his versatility.

The promising running back entered the 2020 NFL draft and was selected by the Washington Football Team in the third round. Gibson’s diverse skill set was highly valued by the team executives, who cited his multi-positional competencies as key for his draft selection. After signing his contract, Gibson quickly demonstrated his worth, scoring his first touchdown in Week 2 and having a spectacular performance against the Baltimore Ravens with a total of 128 yards from scrimmage.

Gibson continued to make strides throughout the 2020 season, setting numerous records and leading all rookies with 11 rushing touchdowns. His performance earned him a spot alongside Washington rookies such as Alfred Morris who recorded 1,000 yards from scrimmage in their debut season.

In the 2021 season, Gibson showed consistency in his performance, notably recording the franchise’s second-longest touchdown reception at 73 yards against the Buffalo Bills. His performance against the Atlanta Falcons brought his career rushing yards to over a 1,000, establishing him as one of the impressive players of Washington’s franchise history to reach this landmark in just two seasons.

However, the latter part of the 2021 season proved to be a challenging period for Gibson. He was benched due to a stint on the team’s COVID-19 reserve list, and subsequently lost his starting position to rookie Brian Robinson Jr in the 2022 preseason. But, he bounced back after Robinson Jr’s sudden exit due to external circumstances, and quickly regained his starting position.

Despite facing injury challenges later in the 2022 season, Gibson managed to record notable performances, including the franchise’s 3,000th touchdown which earned a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His dedication and ability to brave through adversities landed him a three-year contract with the New England Patriots in March of 2024.
