Bryce Baringer, born on April 26, 1999, is a name that resonates great talent and hard work on the field. Today, he shines as an American professional football punter, playing prominently for the New England Patriots, one of the most respected teams in the National Football League (NFL). However, Baringer’s journey to the NFL was not easy, and his robust football career entails a lot of sweat, disappointments, and resilience. This is a peek into Bryce Baringer’s life.

The seeds of Baringer’s athletic career were sown in Waterford, a town in Michigan, where he was born and spent his childhood. As a bright, energetic kid, Baringer attended Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy.

Baringer’s transition to college was a turbulent period involving some significant decisions. Initially, Baringer signed a National Letter of Intent to play college football at Southern Illinois. However, circumstances changed, and he was granted a release. He then committed to the Illinois Fighting Illini as a preferred walk-on.

Starting his freshman season, Baringer honed his skills at Illinois. He was redshirted during his first year, which was an opportunity to refine his skills and strategies. After his first season, Baringer decided to transfer to Michigan State University to further his football career. Although joining Michigan State, Baringer wasn’t initially planning to continue his football journey until he was approached by the Spartans coaching staff.

After unsuccessful tries at a couple of tryouts, Baringer was finally admitted to the Spartans team owing to an unfortunate turn of events when two team punters, Jake Hartbarger and Tyler Hunt, were injured during the 2018 season. Baringer then played in four games that year, punting 15 times for an impressive average of 32.4 yards.

Despite the promising trajectory, Baringer’s journey had another twist awaiting. The Spartans chose to cut him ahead of the 2019 season when Australian punter Jack Bouwmeester was added to their recruiting class. Despite this setback, Baringer continued to practice independently, and his journey took a positive turn when Bouwmeester left the team at the season’s conclusion.

During his redshirt junior season, Baringer faced stiff competition from Mitchell Crawford, a graduate transfer from UTEP. However, he won the punting position early in the season, averaging an excellent 43.6 yards per punt on 37 punts. Baringer’s senior year saw him punt 59 times for a Michigan State record 48.4 yard average, earning him a place on the second team All-Big Ten Conference.

The year 2020 was a watershed moment in Baringer’s life. Amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic, Baringer used the extra year of eligibility granted to college athletes and returned to Michigan State. In his final season, he was declared the best punting prospect for the 2023 NFL Draft by ESPN analyst Mel Kiper.

Fate had its way in the 2023 NFL Draft when Baringer was selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round, 192nd overall. He signed a standard four-year rookie contract valued at approximately $4.02 million, including a healthy signing bonus of $178,459. Due to his outstanding performance, he earned a place in the PFWA NFL All-Rookie Team.

As a professional player, Baringer did not let the Patriots down. He began his career with a punt of at least 50 yards in each of his first 26 games. His streak ended in Week 11 of the 2024 NFL season.
