Nick Folk's Biography

Nicholas Alexander Folk, known as Nick Folk, was born on November 5, 1984 in Los Angeles, California. Raised in the city, he experienced his earliest encounters with football at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California. During his senior year, he earned the title of ‘All-CIF’ as a punter and made the second team as a place kicker. His athletic skills weren’t limited to football, he was also the captain of the school’s soccer team from which he received a catalogue of accolades, such as All-CIF Division, all-league, and All-Valley honors. The sporty scholar was awarded a football scholarship to study at the University of Arizona, where he juggled different positions, including punting and kicking duties during his sophomore year.

Folk embarked on his professional football career when the Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL draft. He quickly made a name for himself at the 2008 Pro Bowl, where he was selected for the rookie spot as an NFC kicker. During this time he also smashed several records including most points scored by a rookie placekicker in Cowboys history, while his performance highlighted the potential for a promising career ahead, it was followed by the discovery of a hip-flexor injury towards the end of the 2008 season which failed to recover as expected. This resulted in a marked decrease in performance in 2009 and he was subsequently waived by the Cowboys in December of that year.

Retrospectively, this rejection became the stepping stone for his remarkable journey with the New York Jets. Folk’s relationship with the Jets coaching team, particularly special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff, helped him refine his techniques after properly rehabilitation from his injury. In his time with the Jets (2010 to 2016), he set several records, including a franchise record for the longest field goal and proved to be a stalwart, reliable kicker, which eventually led to his selection as the franchise tag for the Jets during the 2014 season. However, an unfortunate quad injury in a pregame warm-up against the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015 led to his placement on the team’s injured reserve list.

Following his recovery, Folk persisted through the 2016 season and was ultimately released by the Jets as a salary cap move in 2017. He then moved on to a short, quite unsuccessful spell with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers which culminated with their releasing him due to injury in 2017.

A year away from football in 2018 did not dampen Folk’s spirit, instead he emerged stronger when he decided to pursue a comeback in 2019 with the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football (AAF). However, the AAF venture eventually ceased operations in April 2019, marking a brief but noteworthy period where Folk achieved a record for the longest AAF field goal at 55 yards.

Returning to the NFL with the New England Patriots in 2019 proved to be a good move for Folk. During his time with the Patriots, he showcased great consistency and provided several key winning points, including a 30th consecutive field goal that gave the Jets a 3-0 lead. It tied the team record for consecutive field goals, previously held by Stephen Gostkowski. Folk later surpassed this with a 32nd consecutive field goal. Even a brief release due to health conditions did not halt Folk’s momentum with the Patriots as he was eventually re-signed, this time he became the mainstay, leading the league in scoring during the 2021 season.

Folk signed with the Tennessee Titans in 2023, adding another chapter to his illustrious career, painting a picture of a resilient athlete who adapts to new environments and continuously performs at a high level. Despite the various challenges that arose throughout his career including rejection, injury, recovery, and changing dynamics, Nick Folk has positioned himself as a distinguished figure in American football. His journey reflects a continuous pursuit of success, which will undoubtedly inspire future generations of athletes.
