Hunter Renfrow's Biography

James Hunter Renfrow, best known as Hunter Renfrow, was born on December 21, 1995. He is a highly respected figure in the American football scene, known for his role as a professional wide receiver. He played his college football for the Clemson Tigers, where he had the honor of winning two national championships. Renfrow embarked on his professional journey when he was selected by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft.

Renfrow’s history with football began early on at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where his father, Tim Renfrow, served as the football coach. During his high school years, Renfrow played as the team’s quarterback and was recognized as a two-star recruit by Rivals.com. He was sought after by a number of institutions, including Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, and Wofford — the last of which his father had played for.

Despite receiving scholarship offers for both football and baseball, Renfrow opted to attend Clemson University and joined the Clemson Tigers football team as a walk-on. Standing at 5 feet 10 inches and weighing only 155 pounds, Renfrow was lean but tenacious. He took a redshirt in 2014, and by the following year, he had gained enough weight to be awarded a scholarship.

In his redshirt freshman year in 2015, Renfrow played all 13 games, starting in 10 of them. He showcased his potential by recording 492 yards and five touchdowns. Renfrow also caught two touchdown passes in the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship. After an injury-limited sophomore year in 2016, Renfrow came back strong in 2017 to catch the game-winning touchdown from quarterback Deshaun Watson in the National Championship against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

In 2018, Renfrow’s accomplishments were recognized with the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded to the best college player who began his career as a walk-on. His contributions played a critical role in leading Clemson to its second national championship in three years.

Renfrow’s professional career began when he was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the 2019 NFL draft as the 149th overall pick. Renfrow had the distinctive honor of being one of three Clemson players drafted by the Raiders that year. He made his NFL debut in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football and gradually increased his performance, scoring his first NFL touchdown during a Week 8 game against the Houston Texans.

Despite suffering a severe rib injury during a match against the New York Jets, which affected his season considerably, Renfrow returned to form against the Los Angeles Chargers, catching seven passes for 107 yards. In his first professional season, Renfrow finished with 49 receptions for 605 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

While Renfrow’s career rose, he faced a setback in 2020 when he was fined US$15,000 for violating the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols. However, he bounced back with robust performances in the 2021 season to set career records in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. He was named as a Pro Bowler in recognition of his efforts.

In 2022, the Las Vegas Raiders rewarded Renfrow’s efforts with a two-year, $32 million contract extension. Despite issues with injuries and fumbles during the 2022 season, Renfrow maintaned respectable statestics. However, The Raiders released Renfrow at the end of his contract in 2024.

Off-field, Renfrow is drawn to family and faith. Born as one of six children to parents Tim and Suzanne, Renfrow now has his own family with high school sweetheart, Camilla, whom he married in 2019; the couple has a daughter together. Religion holds a major role in Renfrow’s life, he is a devoted Christian who believes that forming a strong relationship with Christ is ultimately the driving force in life. Despite the passing fickleness of football and the world, Renfrow believes that his faith would stand the test of time.
