Bobby McCain's Biography

Bobby Marcellous McCain, an esteemed figure in American professional football, was born on August 18, 1993 in Sylacauga, Alabama. As he built a reputation as a safety for the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings, he continued to exemplify his athletic prowess and passion that had shone from a young age.

McCain’s journey to success began at Oxford High School, where he immersed himself in the world of football. Rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, his skills earned him the rank of the 36th best recruit in Alabama in 2011. Despite receiving offers from Auburn, Kentucky, Mississippi State, and Tennessee among others, McCain decided to pursue college football at Memphis University.

During his collegiate career, McCain proved himself as a formidable opponent on the gridiron. A starter for four years, he managed to intercept 12 passes, 11 of which were achieved over the span of his final two years.

Upon graduation, McCain entered the national football spotlight when the Miami Dolphins drafted him in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft, as the 145th overall pick and the 18th cornerback. Shortly after, he signed a contract with the team worth $2.50 million over four years, with a signing bonus of $228,288.

His debut season with the Dolphins proved quite successful, with McCain featuring in all 16 games and making four starts. However, changes in the team’s coaching staff, including the firing of head coach Joe Philbin and the promotion of tight ends coach Dan Campbell, presented challenges.

Accruing 45 combined tackles, six pass deflections, an interception, a sack, and a forced fumble, McCain’s performance in the 2016 season was noteworthy. He started in his first career playoff game in January 2017, although the Dolphins fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 2018 season brought about a new era for McCain when he signed a $27m contract extension over four years with the Dolphins. McCain’s sterling efforts in the 2018 season led to him finishing with two sacks, one interception, and five passes defended.

Despite an early-season injury ending his 2019 campaign prematurely, McCain made a splendid return the following season, featuring in every regular-season game and contributing one interception and five passes defended.

Post-Miami days brought about new challenges and adventures for McCain. In May 2021, he began a one-year stint with the Washington Football Team. It was in here that McCain excelled, featuring in 17 games, with four interceptions, nine passes defended, and his first ever career touchdown against the New York Giants’ quarterback Jake Fromm.

Upon re-signing with Washington for a two-year contract, McCain showed unwavering tenacity, appearing in all games and proving himself as an indispensable player on the field. However, his time with the team came to an end when he was released on February 27, 2023.

McCain moved on to brief spells with the New York Giants and finally with the Minnesota Vikings.
