BIOGRAPHY

Juan Ronel Toscano-Anderson was born on April 10, 1993, in East Oakland, California. Known for his exceptional prowess on the basketball court, Toscano-Anderson’s cultural heritage is a blend of his mother’s Mexican-American roots and his African-American father’s background. His maternal side traces ancestry back to Michoacán, Mexico, from where his grandfather immigrated in the 1960s. Toscano-Anderson grew up faithful to both his cultures, speaking Spanish and observing both Mexican and American holidays. His jersey number 95 is believed to be a tribute to his childhood home on 95th Avenue in Oakland.

Toscano-Anderson’s initial foray into basketball took place in high school where, under the numerically simplified name of Juan Anderson, he spearheaded Castro Valley High School to a record-setting campaign. His performance in the 2010-11 season resulted in an impressive record of 30 wins versus 2 losses, a first for the school. Toscano-Anderson’s undeniable talent was recognized by Rivals.com, where he was ranked 61st among all basketball recruits nationwide in 2011.

College years saw Toscano-Anderson shift base to Marquette where he commenced his NCAA season in 2011-12. He was off to a rocky start, having been buffeted by an NCAA suspension that saw him inactive for the first three games. However, the suspension did not deter him, and he went on to make his collegiate debut against Mississippi in November 2011. Toscano-Anderson’s performance during his college years was remarkable, with his résumé proudly boasting of formidable statistics across different games, typifying his skill and tenacity.

After graduating from college, he was left undrafted in the 2015 NBA draft. However, this did not deter him and he continued his journey by playing for professional leagues outside the NBA, including Soles de Mexicali in Mexico and the Bucaneros de La Guaira in Venezuela. His consecutive successes finally led to his training camp inclusion with the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA G League. Following a training stint, he was included in the team’s opening night roster, eventually landing a three-year contract with the Golden State Warriors in 2020.

Toscano-Anderson’s career took a significant leap as he began to mark high-tide points in NBA, recording his career-high 16-points against the Pelicans in February 2020. His contributions were recognized followed by his contract being converted into a standard NBA contract by 2021. Such accomplishments made Toscano-Anderson the first Mexican-descent NBA player to take part in the Slam Dunk Contest on February 19, 2022.

Reaping the fruits of his hard work, courage, and determination, Toscano-Anderson took Gen-NBA by storm when he won the 2022 NBA Finals with the Warriors in June 2022. This victory was unprecedented as it marked the second time an NBA player of Mexican heritage had attained the championship ring, 33 years after Mark Aguirre’s win.

Embarking on a new chapter in his career, Toscano-Anderson signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in July 2022; a move that led to a heartwarming standing ovation from his home crowd in Bay Area. His journey with the Lakers was followed by a switch to the Utah Jazz, a free agent workout with the Golden State Warriors, and eventually a return to the Capitanes of the NBA G League.

Besides his sterling club performances, Toscano-Anderson also displayed his immense basketball talent at a global level. As a member of the Mexico national basketball team, he participated in the 2016 FIBA World Olympic qualifying tournament in Turin, Italy. True to his roots and in respect of his dual cultural heritage, he played in the tournament, honoring his Mexican passport with the simple name of Juan Toscano.
