BIOGRAPHY

Tecia Torres, known within her fighting circle as the “Tiny Tornado,” was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, on August 16, 1989. She is a dynamic American mixed martial artist, currently competing in the strawweight division of the iconic Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Torres embraces a diverse lineage with Puerto Rican, Portuguese, and Irish descent. Her familial roots trace back to the picturesque town of Maunabo in Puerto Rico.

Torres, along with her single mother, siblings, and martial arts, journeyed to Coral Springs when she was merely five. Since the age of three, martial arts became a continual part of her life. She dedicated over a decade to taekwondo before she could adorn the coveted black belt, signifying her expertise. Boxing was another component of her training regime, with an impressive amateur record of sixteen victories and only four losses in muay thai.

Despite having an engaging background in sports, Torres placed paramount importance on her education. In 2010, at the age of 20, she graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a double major in Criminal Justice and Sociology. Later in 2017, she added another feather to her academic cap by gaining a master’s degree in Criminology from the same alma mater.

In 2011, Torres embarked on her amateur mixed martial arts career, which was defined by resounding victories. Out of her seven bouts, she triumphed in each, receiving 115-pound titles in MMA Solutions, US Freedom Fighter Championship, and American Battle Championships. Making her mark in the amateur circuit, she was ready to debut professionally.

In 2012, Torres expanded her horizons by entering the realm of professional mixed martial arts. She penned a contract with Invicta Fighting Championships and made a successful debut against Kaiyana Rain at Invicta FC 3. Her performance earned the approval of judges, and she emerged victorious by unanimous decision in October 2012.

In 2013, Torres faced several skilled competitors including Paige VanZant, Rose Namajunas, and Felice Herrig. She won every single fight with a unanimous decision, thereby making 2013 a year of steadfast victories for her.

However, it was December 2013 that marked the turning point of her career. Torres, along with ten other women, was selected by the UFC for its newly formed strawweight division. She became a prominent participant in The Ultimate Fighter reality series as part of a championship tournament. Although she lost one fight to Randa Markos, containing her indomitable spirit, she rebounded to defeat Bec Rawlings and made her outstanding debut in UFC.

Over the years, her tenacity and perseverance have led her to fight some of the best UFC fighters like Angela Magaña, Angela Hill, Michelle Waterson, Rose Namajunas, Jessice Andrade, Joanna Jędrzejczyk, and Zhang Weili. Despite her losses, Torres stood her ground and showcased unmatched agility and versatility in every fight.

2020 was not the best for her due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, causing a reshuffling of her fights. Yet, she managed to win against Brianna Van Buren and promotional newcomer Sam Hughes. Also, she had a rematch victory over Angela Hill in 2021.

Torres showcases a dominant fighting style, combining elements of her initial martial arts training- taekwondo and karate. Regular lateral movements, high-strike punches, and frequent kicking techniques form a dominant part of her strategy. Yet, traditional submission techniques remain less utilized by Torres.

Beyond her high-energy life in the ring, Torres stands as an icon outside. She is proudly straight-edge, refraining from alcohol, tobacco and other recreational drugs. Alongside her physical health, she prioritizes her mental well-being and openly speaks about her struggles with mental health issues. A strong advocate of LGBTQ+ community rights, she is married to the UFC women’s bantamweight champion, Raquel Pennington, celebrating the birth of their daughter in June 2023.

Today, Torres looks forward to her upcoming bout against Tabatha Ricci on May 11, 2024, at UFC on ESPN 56 with bold confidence. With each fight, she aims to build the “Tiny Tornado” legacy, aspiring not to just win, but become a lasting champion. In the cage and outside, Tecia Torres stands as an embodiment of strength, determination, and tenacity.
