BIOGRAPHY

Amanda Ribas made her entrance into the world on August 26, 1993, in Varginha, Brazil. Born into a family deeply immersed in the martial arts world, Ribas’ destiny was written early on. Her father, Marcelo Ribas, excelled in the arts of Jiu-jitsu, judo, and Muay Thai. Marcelo, a renowned coach and respected name in the industry, would lay down the path for Amanda’s future and a career that would see her rise to the top of professional mixed martial arts.

Ribas got her feet early on the canvas, her heart fully entranced by the art form. After an extended circuit of training under her father, she eventually found herself part of the national judo youth teams in Brazil, signifying the first milestone success in her journey. Nevertheless, a road bump in the form of knee injuries interrupted her streak, forcing her to take a break from training and competition. Her absences, however, rekindled her desire to join the ranks again, inspired by the MMA training sessions of her colleagues.

After cresting the mountaintop victory at the 2014 IMMAF World Championship in the Women’s Flyweight division, Ribas officially kickstarted her professional MMA career. The majority of her fights unfolded in her homeland, Brazil, an arena that saw her impressive record stand at 6–1 before being signed by Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

The turning point of her life came when she was slated to face Juliana Lima at The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale on July 7, 2017. However, Ribas was flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for a potential anti-doping violation sprouting from a June 7 instance, causing her to be dropped from the match and replaced by Tecia Torres. Following her positive test result for Ostarine, she was initially handed a two-year sanction by USADA until investigations revealed that a dietary supplement contamination was responsible for the result. Ribas’ return was marked on May 3, 2019.

Her return marked the beginning of her UFC journey. In her debut fight at the UFC on ESPN 3 on June 29, 2019, she faced Emily Whitmire and emerged victorious with a rear-naked choke submission in the second round. Ribas continued her winning streak against Mackenzie Dern at UFC Fight Night: Joanna vs. Waterson on October 12, 2019, and a rescheduled bout with Paige VanZant which she won through a first-round submission at UFC 251 on July 12, 2020.

Unfortunately, due to a variety of factors including a bout of COVID-19, Ribas faced multiple fight cancellations throughout the years, including fights against Carla Esparza, Michelle Waterson, and Angela Hill. However, she remained steadfast, securing victories against Virna Jandiroba and Viviane AraΓΊjo in 2021 and 2023, respectively.

As of 2023, Ribas remains a formidable opponent in the UFC, making a name for herself in the Strawweight and Flyweight division. Despite overcoming trials and setbacks, she displays resilience and an unwavering spirit, making her both a respected and feared competitor in the octagon.

While victories are always sweet, losses also form part of her professional highlights. Some of her notable matches include losses against Marina Rodriguez due to technical knockout and Katlyn Chookagian in a close split decision, cementing her first Fight of the Night bonus award. She also faced a technical knockout loss against Maycee Barber, but overcoming those losses, she proved her mettle with a Performance of the Night award-winning fight against Luana Pinheiro in November 2023.

Ribas’ resolute spirit and undeniable skill in the ring have led her to be #9 on UFC’s women’s strawweight and flyweight rankings by November 2023. Her journey may feature pain, suspensions, and victories. But that’s the signature of a true fighter – to fight back against odds and every single day. Born on the mat, Amanda Ribas has defied adversity and molded it into strength, paving her way as one of the preeminent fighters in UFC’s history. Her legacy remains an inspiration for every budding fighter.
