Over his high school career, he recorded an impressive 3,793 receiving yards and scored 50 touchdowns which caught the attention of the University of Iowa scouts who offered him an opportunity to play college football.

At the University of Iowa, he joined the Iowa Hawkeyes and initially struggled to get significant playtime as he was second-choice behind Nate Wieting and Shaun Beyer. He initially played in 12 games, with two starts in his freshman year, but tripled his figures by sophomore year with significant receptions leading to impressive yards and his first career touchdown.
