BIOGRAPHY

Michael Maurice Pennel Jr., born on May 9, 1991, has made his mark as a prominent nose tackle in the National Football League (NFL). Known for his strength and skill, Pennel is a professional football player associated with the Kansas City Chiefs. Before joining the NFL, Pennel had an impressive journey in college football, where he played for the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes, the Arizona State Sun Devils, and the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves.

In 2014, he was picked by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent. Before joining the Packers, Pennel honed his skills at Scottsdale Community College, Arizona State University, and Colorado State University Pueblo. An unexpected event that shaped his career was a suspension he endured in 2012 while playing for Arizona State over comments he had made on Twitter. He decided to switch to Colorado State University-Pueblo following this suspension.

Despite going undrafted in the 2014 NFL draft season, Pennel’s talents could not be overlooked, and he was signed by the Green Bay Packers on May 12, 2014. Pennel, along with Jayrone Elliott, stood out among the undrafted players that season and made it to the Packers’ final roster. During his rookie season, he appeared in 13 games and succeeded in making eight tackles. The following year, he appeared in all 16 games, starting five, accomplishing 24 tackles, one sack, and forcing one fumble.

In 2016, Pennel ran into trouble again by violating the league’s substance abuse policy twice, which led to his suspension for the first four games and then for the last four games of the season. Despite the overbearing circumstances, Pennel did not give in and managed to earn seven tackles and defended a pass in the eight games he played that season.

The Packers released Pennel in January 2017, leaving him without a team. However, just a month later, in February, the New York Jets claimed him off waivers and he became a part of their unit. His contract was extended further with the Jets on March 16, 2017. During his time with the Jets, he delivered a career-high performance of 35 tackles in all 16 games in that season. Pennel continued to play with the New York Jets until February 2019, after which, he became a free agent.

In March 2019, he signed a two-year contract with the New England Patriots. However, they released him in August the same year. Just a couple of months later, he returned to NFL, signing with the Kansas City Chiefs. With his contribution, the Chiefs were able to triumph over the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship Game. This victorious run led them to the Super Bowl LIV, where Pennel made a single tackle which aided in the Chiefs’ 31-20 win against the San Francisco 49ers.

In April 2020, he re-signed a one-year contract with the Chiefs. However, due to the suspension he served for the first two games of the 2020 season, he was reactivated on September 23, 2020. He then signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears on June 18, 2021, but unfortunately, he was placed on injured reserve on August 24, 2021, due to an injury, and later released on August 31, 2021.

His journey continued as he was signed to the practice squad of the Atlanta Falcons on September 15, 2021. Soon after, on October 5, 2021, he was promoted to the Falcons’ active roster. Rapid changes continued in his career when the Bears signed him again on June 13, 2022. He was released once again on September 9, but re-signed to the practice squad and shortly after, promoted to the active roster on September 12. During his time with the Bears in all 17 games, Pennel recorded 26 total tackles and forced one fumble.

On October 24, 2023, Pennel joined the Chiefs squad and helped them secure victory in Super Bowl LVIII against the 49ers. He was instrumental in restraining the 49ers’ running game in the second half, making six tackles. His brilliant performance earned him his second Super Bowl ring. On March 13, 2024, Pennel extended his journey with the Chiefs by re-signing with the team, promising more phenomenal performances in the seasons to come. His exceptional talent and tenacity are a testament to his commitment as a professional NFL player, making him a key player in the league’s narrative.
