BIOGRAPHY
Marquise Derell Goodwin, an American professional football wide receiver and former Olympian, was born on November 19th, 1990, in Lubbock, Texas. His early years were spent attending Rowlett High School in Rowlett, Texas, where he shone on the football field and in track events for the Rowlett Eagles.
Goodwin displayed an athletic prowess from an early age, setting the second fastest 100-meter time (10.24w) in the state. He was also the state champion in long jump and triple jump, and a member of the victorious 4×100-meter relay team. A testament to his versatility and talent, Goodwin won seven Texas Class 5A state track and field championships while at Rowlett.
In track and field, Goodwin excelled at long jump events, a discipline he competed in nationally and internationally. At the 2008 World Junior Championships in Athletics in Bydgoszcz, Poland, and the 2008 and 2009 United States Junior Championships, he clinched the top spot.
Additionally, Goodwin set the national high school record in the long jump at the 2009 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, claiming fifth place. His impressive record in high school also included catching 132 passes for 1,709 yards (12.95 average), and 17 touchdowns.
Goodwin’s athletic journey continued at the University of Texas at Austin, earning him a scholarship. He played for the Texas Longhorns football team (2009–2012) and competed for the Texas Longhorns track and field team (2010–2012), under the guidance of coach Mack Brown.
In this period, Goodwin showcased his ability in several track events winning five Big 12 Conference championships and earning All-Big 12 accolades seven times. He held the distinction of being the Longhorns’ indoor record holder in long jump, and finished second in the 2012 NCAA Indoor long jump title. Furthermore, he took home the 2011 U.S. Outdoor Track, Field long jump title, and the 2012 Outdoor Championship/Olympic Trials title.
Goodwin’s college football records are also commendable. He started in 21 out of 49 games he played for the Longhorns, with career statistics showing 116 receptions for 1,296 yards and six touchdowns. He also demonstrated dexterity in rushing and returning, rushing 46 times for 405 yards and 44 kickoff returns for 985 yards and one touchdown.
Due to his college achievements and prowess, Goodwin was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the third round, with the 78th overall pick, of the 2013 NFL draft. He spent four years with the Bills, participating in 12 games in his rookie season and making 17 receptions for 283 receiving yards.
The 2017 NFL season saw Goodwin move to the San Francisco 49ers on a two-year contract. His debut season proved to be successful, culminating in 56 catches for 962 yards and two touchdowns. Appreciating his contributions, the 49ers extended Goodwin’s contract in 2018.
Unfortunately, injuries interrupted Goodwin’s 2019 NFL season, restricting him to only nine games before transitioning to injured reserve by December 2019. He finished the season with 12 receptions for 186 yards and a touchdown. Despite Goodwin’s absence, the 49ers made it to Super Bowl LIV but fell short of victory.
Following his stint with the 49ers, Goodwin moved to the Philadelphia Eagles, agreeing to a restructured one-year deal worth $1.35 million in exchange for a swap of sixth-round draft picks in the 2020 NFL draft. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Goodwin decided to opt out of the 2020 season to prioritize his family. Subsequently, in 2021, Goodwin was signed by the Chicago Bears, followed by the Cleveland Browns in 2023.
Internationally, Goodwin represented the United States in long jump at several renowned championships, including the 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships, 2011 IAAF World Championships, and the 2012 Summer Olympics. He revisited his passion for track and field in 2015 after a three-year break. Despite not making it to the Olympics in 2016 and 2020, he clocked commendable performances.
Away from the sporting world, Goodwin is happily married to former Longhorn hurdler champion Morgan Snow-Goodwin. They suffered the tragic loss of their premature son in 2017, and in 2018, they mourned the loss of their unborn twin boys. Despite these heartbreaking incidents, the couple welcomed their daughter, Marae, in 2020 followed by a son, Marquise Jr, in 2022. Notably, Goodwin’s human resilience is as much a part of his story as his athletic prowess.
