Joshua Dobbs's Biography

Robert Joshua Dobbs was born in Alpharetta, Georgia, on January 26, 1995. The son of Stephanie and Robert Dobbs, Josh followed his passion for football, which started at the tender age of five, to become a professional football quarterback. His impressive career spans numerous teams in the National Football League (NFL), including the San Francisco 49ers.

Dobbs made a name for himself during his college years playing for the Tennessee Volunteers. His exceptional performance caused the Pittsburgh Steelers to realized his talents and picked him in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft. Throughout his career, Dobbs has showcased his skills in various teams, including as a starter for the Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, and Minnesota Vikings.

Despite being diagnosed with alopecia areata mid-transition from elementary to junior high school, Dobbs continued to rise to the ranks. Not only is he an excellent athlete, but also a high achiever in academics. He completed a major in aerospace engineering during his time at the University of Tennessee, achieved a perfect 4.0-grade point average, and was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa.

While Dobbs’ high school career was spectacular, it was at the University of Tennessee where he truly began breaking records. With his excellent performances, Dobbs played a significant role in taking his team to their first bowl game since the 2010 season. His performance at the 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl won him the title of MVP.

Dobbs earned a reputation as a reliable player during his 2015 debut season for Tennessee. With a solid record as a starter and participant in all 12 regular-season games, he led the team to several crucial victories. He once again commanded attention with an exemplary performance in the 2016 Music City Bowl against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, finishing with numerous passing yards, three rushing touchdowns, and being named the MVP.

Ahead of the 2017 NFL draft, Dobbs received invitations to the Senior Bowl, where the expert reviews were divided. While some projected him as a fourth to fifth-round pick, others were more optimistic, predicting a second to third-round selection. Finally, the Steelers opted for him in the fourth round, replacing Zach Mettenberger.

In his rookie year, Dobbs served as backup, spending most of his time behind Ben Roethlisberger and Landry Jones. It wasn’t until October 7, 2018, that Dobbs made his NFL regular-season debut in a winning game against the Atlanta Falcons. Over the next seasons, Dobbs proved his mettle with solid performances, especially when stepping in for Roethlisberger during injuries.

In 2019, Dobbs was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars after Mason Rudolph secured the backup position, and the Jaguars’ primary quarterback Nick Foles was injured. During his time in Jacksonville, Dobbs pursued an internship at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, reflecting his continuous passion for aerospace studies.

Dobbs returned to the Steelers in September 2020 after being waived by the Jaguars. In April 2021, he re-signed with the Steelers on a one-year contract but was placed on injured reserve in August of the same year.

By April 2022, Dobbs signed a million-dollar deal with the Cleveland Browns but was waived towards the end of November when Deshaun Watson returned from suspension. In the first week of December 2022, Dobbs joined the practice squad of the Detroit Lions, only to be signed off by the Titans later that month.
