The Cincinnati Bengals entered their 54th season in the National Football League (NFL), and their 56th overall, in 2023 with hopes of replicating their relative success from the 2022 season. As one of the key components of the team’s sense of direction, Head Coach Zac Taylor returned for his fifth season at the helm of the team. The Bengals were preparing to improve win records from the previous season, which stood at a respectable 12-4, but despite their best efforts, the team failed to make any substantial improvements.

The season began on a note of promise, but an unfortunate loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the 11th Week was a significant blow. The 34-20 defeat marked a key turning point in the Bengals’ season. The team’s fortunes took a further hit with a Week 17 loss against the formidable Kansas City Chiefs. This defeat, together with victories clocked by the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Buffalo Bills, had serious repercussions on the Bengals campaign. The team was ruled out of playoff contention for the first time since 2020.

The team’s offensive, defensive, and special teams coaches played a crucial role in guiding the team’s oft-noticeable enchancments in running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, and defensive linemen. The reserve lists also proved a valuable resource during challenging times.

The Bengals’ season kicked off with an AFC North matchup against their in-state rivals, the Cleveland Browns. This game was noteworthy for being the 100th meeting of the two franchises. The Browns’ indomitable defense forced the Bengals’ hand, resulting in a regrettable 0-1 start to the season, which marked the second consecutive year that this happened. Other significant games included the Super Bowl LVI rematch with the Rams, which the Bengals managed to win, their second consecutive loss to an in-division rival, and notably, their defeat at the hands of the Tennessee Titans — a first for Joe Burrow.

The Bengals also faced losses against teams visiting their home ground, Paycor Stadium, and had their moments of triumph and disappointment on the road at stadiums across the country. Despite all the adversity, the Bengals rallied and registered a win in their final game of the season against the Cleveland Browns. The win improved their regular-season record to 9-8, marking a milestone in the sport, as every team within the AFC North finished with winning record, a feat last accomplished in 1935.
