Ifeatu Christian-David Melifonwu is an American football safety for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As of September 17, 2026, he is listed on Tampa Bay’s developmental roster after joining the club in July 2026 and returning to its practice squad on September 14, 2026. He previously played for the Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins.
Melifonwu was born on May 2, 1999, in Boston, Massachusetts, and attended Grafton High School. At Syracuse University, he developed as a long, physical defensive back and became a two-year starter after redshirting in 2017. Syracuse recognized him as an All-ACC player following his 2020 season, after which he entered the NFL Draft.
The Detroit Lions selected Melifonwu in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, 101st overall. Initially identified as a cornerback, he later contributed at safety, where his size, length, toughness and athleticism have suited him for coverage and versatile secondary assignments. His career path reflects a transition from college cornerback to an NFL defensive back capable of working at multiple positions.
