Cody James Thompson was born on January 11, 1996, in Huron, Ohio. Standing at an impressive height of 6’1 and weighing approximately 205 pounds, his physique would eventually lend itself naturally to a career in professional football. However, much of Thompson’s journey towards the NFL began at Huron High School in his hometown. As a talented multi-sport athlete, Cody not only played football, but was also engaged in high school basketball and track.
Over time, it became apparent that football was Thompson’s calling. He was an outstanding player in high school and his skills quickly caught the attention of college scouts. With his promising performance, he earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Toledo, in Ohio.
Thompson’s collegiate career was marked by a sterling showcase of skill and determination. He played as a wide receiver for the Toledo Rockets from 2013 to 2018. Though his first season was quiet, by his sophomore year he made a name for himself and broke out as one of the most formidable receivers in the Mid-American Conference.
One of his most remarkable college years was his junior season where he recorded 64 catches for over a thousand yards and 11 touchdowns, earning him First-Team All-MAC honors. Unfortunately, his senior season was cut short due to a leg injury, forcing him to miss most of the games. However, he was able to secure a medical hardship waiver, which allowed him to play another season in 2018. He came back stronger and determined, ending his college career with a spectacular 48 catches, over 10 touchdowns, and a whopping 647 yards.
Proving his college performance was not a fluke, Cody Thompson entered the 2019 NFL Draft upon graduating. However, his journey to the NFL proved more challenging than anticipated when he went undrafted. Regardless, Thompson didn’t let this setback deter him. Instead, it fueled his determination to prove his worth in the professional arena.
Soon after the draft, Thompson was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite showcasing a commendable preseason performance, he was waived before the beginning of the regular season. Aiding his NFL dreams, Thompson was later picked up by the Seattle Seahawks, where he managed to earn a spot on their practice squad for the majority of the 2019 season. His commitment and hard work paid off when he was finally promoted to the active roster for the last game of the regular season and the playoff games.
In 2020, after a season of proving himself, Cody was re-signed by the Seattle Seahawks but was waived again before the start of the season. However, his potential was recognized, and he was re-signed to the practice squad after clearing waivers. Despite these unpredictable circumstances, Thompson remains a promising player with potential for a successful career in the NFL.
Beyond his athletic career, Thompson is known for his academic excellence. At Toledo, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Sales as well as a master’s degree in Business Administration, all while playing college football.
