Brandon Graham

Brandon Lee Graham, born April 3, 1988, is a defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football League (NFL). Selected by the Eagles in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft with the thirteenth pick, Graham was the first player chosen from the Big Ten Conference. The professional footballer’s successful career is predicated on an early passion for the sport coupled with an outstanding level of talent showcased throughout his high school and college years.

In high school, Graham was a highly rated and decorated linebacker. His leadership skills emerged early on as he captained the 2006 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Graham’s abilities earned him a string of nominations and recognitions, including All-American and finalist for the top honours a high school football player can receive.

After high school, Graham pursued his career at the University of Michigan as part of the Michigan Wolverines football team. Here, he achieved the distinctions of 2009 Big Ten Conference co-MVP and 2009 FBS tackles for a loss champion. With the Wolverines, he recorded impressive stats with a total of 56 career tackles and 29.5 career sacks. In 2008 and 2009, Graham was the Big Ten Conference leader for tackles for loss. His performances also led him to become a finalist for the 2009 NCAA Division I FBS football Hendricks Award and to receive nominations for numerous other accolades.

As a professional footballer, Graham accrued more distinctions. He was named a second team 2016 All-Pro selection and a 2020 Pro Bowl selection. During the 2017 NFL season, he led the Philadelphia Eagles, the same team that later became Super Bowl LII champions, in quarterback sacks with 9.5. This accomplishment included a crucial strip sack on Tom Brady that played a defining role in the Eagles’ first Super Bowl victory—an event that has gained an iconic status in Philadelphia’s sports history.

As Graham’s success in professional football is widely known, what is often overlooked is his deep roots in the sport and the obstacles he has overcome. Growing up in Detroit, the young athlete played football for the Police Athletic League Detroit Giants for seven years before joining the eighth-grade team. Despite the poor facilities at his high school, Graham’s talent didn’t go unnoticed, and he eventually became an Oracle in the world of football even before he joined college.

One of the keys to Graham’s success has been his adaptability. Despite his initial recruitment as a linebacker, a bout of overeating led to a significant weight gain. Instead of being hampered by the weight gain, Graham was moved to defensive end, and he excelled at the position.

Today, Graham’s talents on the football field are widely recognized. Among many other honors, Parade Magazine named him an All-American, and USA Today ranked him the No. 14 player in the nation.
