Albert Okwuegbunam

Albert Chukwuemeka Okwuegbunam, more commonly known as Albert O., was born on April 25, 1998, and carved a substantial career so far in professional football as a tight end, starting with the Denver Broncos and now with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). The American footballer’s odyssey in the sport offers an inspiring tale of determination, resilience, and unwavering faith in self.

Rising from humble beginnings, Albert spent his formative years in Springfield, Illinois, where he attended Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. Here, he discovered his love for football and demonstrated his superb athleticism, primarily as a wide receiver. He showcased exceptional promise, throwing strong hints of a budding football career.

Driven by his passion, Albert committed to the University of Missouri to pursue his college football career, laying the groundwork for his glory-filled journey to the NFL. In 2016, he chose to redshirt his first year at Missouri to get acclimatized to the aggressive pace of collegiate football.

The year 2017 heralded in his official college career. He played all 13 games and ended the season with disarmingly impressive stats that sacked the critics. He recorded 29 receptions, covering a span of 415 yards, and scored 11 touchdowns that attested to his profound talent and potential.

The following year, Albert returned as Missouri’s starting tight end, reinforcing his indispensable position in the team. Yet, his career progression took a dramatic turn. Following the 2019 season, Albert decided to eschew his final year of eligibility, opting instead to declare for the 2020 NFL draft.

His bold move bore fruit when he was selected in the fourth round as the 118th overall pick by the Denver Broncos. This exciting moment also reconnected him with former Missouri teammate, Drew Lock. Albert’s football career had officially entered a new level, from college football to the professional arena.

Despite entering the big league, he remained grounded in his commitment and passion for the sport. He made his spectacular NFL debut in Week 6 of the 2020 season against the New England Patriots. His performance was marked with two receptions scattering over 45 yards, substantially contributing to the 18-12 victory of the Broncos.

His promising NFL journey, however, met an unfortunate pause when he suffered an ACL tear in November 2020, which led to him being placed on injured reserve. The following year, he was again placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury but was swiftly activated again by the end of October.

As the year 2022 dawned, Albert played in 8 games for Denver, during which he caught 10 passes, covering 95 yards, and even scored a touchdown. This marked his resolute comeback post his injury.

Adding a new chapter in his career, Albert, along with a 2025 seventh-round pick, was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for the latter’s 2024 sixth round pick. It was a significant shift in his career, but Albert approached it with his characteristic maturity and readiness.

In February 2024, he penned a year-long contract extension with the Eagles, strengthening his bond with the team. However, yet another setback reared up when he was placed on injured reserve again in August of the same year.

Despite these hurdles, Albert continues his journey in the NFL with unbroken spirits. His story paints the tale of a footballer who thrives on his unyielding resolve, raw talent, and undeterred resilience.
