Al Lapuaho Woods, better known as Al Woods, is a prominent figure in American professional football. He plays as a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL). At 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 330 pounds, Woods is a powerfully-built player, known for his resiliency, tenacity, and excellent tackling skills. He currently is a free agent.

Early Life and Education

Born on March 25, 1987, in Jennings, Louisiana, Al Woods always had a fervor for sports. His interest in football came at an early age. He exhibited immense potential from the start, but it was his years at Elton High School that laid the foundation for his future career. During his high school career, he amassed 160 tackles, including 25 for losses, seven sacks, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in his 2004 senior year. He gained recognition as one of the best high school recruits, earning All-state, All-Southwest Louisiana, and district MVP honors.

After graduating high school, Woods was offered scholarships from several universities. However, he decided to attend Louisiana State University (LSU), a decision motivated by the school’s excellent football program and the prospect of playing in the competitive Southeastern Conference.

Woods’ career at LSU was phenomenal. He played in 41 games, starting in 15. During his time at LSU, he posted 73 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles. This impressive performance during his collegiate career led him to be considered one of the most explosive prospects in the 2010 NFL draft.

NFL Career

Al Woods was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round (123rd overall pick) of the 2010 NFL Draft. His NFL career, however, didn’t take off immediately, as he was released by the Saints at the end of the preseason. Following this, he had brief stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks, before eventually landing up again with the Steelers in 2011.

His second time with the Steelers was much more successful. He was primarily used as a reserve nose tackle behind veteran Casey Hampton. In 2013, he had the best season of his career, recording 16 tackles and two sacks. After showing improvement and promise, the Tennessee Titans signed Woods in 2014.

As a Titan, Woods established himself as a solid rotational player on their defensive line. His tough, physical style of play earned him a three-year contract extension with the Titans in 2017 but was released after one season due to salary cap issues. After his release, Woods signed a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts. He had a solid season with the Colts, recording 24 tackles, and played an essential role in helping to improve their run defense.

After his successful season with the Colts, Woods signed another one-year contract in 2019, this time with the Seattle Seahawks. He registered 32 tackles, one sack, and two fumble recoveries during the season. However, the Seahawks released him in 2020 due to salary cap constraints.

Al Woods signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020 but opted out of the season due to concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Returning to action in 2021, he signed a two-year contract with Seattle Seahawks.

Private life

Off the field, Al Woods is a dedicated family man. He is married to Megan Woods, and they have two children together. They reside in Seattle, Washington.

Woods is also actively involved in community service. In 2017, he was nominated for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, an award presented yearly to an NFL player who demonstrates on-field sportsmanship, respect for opponents, and integrity in competition.

Conclusion

Al Woods’ journey from a small-town boy with big dreams to an established NFL player hasn’t been without challenges. However, his resilience and dedication to the sport have earned him immense respect in the league. As he continues his career in professional football, Al Woods serves as a sterling example of hard work, dedication, and the determination to succeed no matter the obstacles.
