The Cleveland Browns are an iconic American football team that is a member of the National Football League (NFL). Their rich history stretches across generations, and the year 2024 marked their 72nd participating season in the NFL and 76th season overall. The dynamic duo of Kevin Stefanski, the team’s head coach, and Andrew Berry, the general manager, has guided the team for five seasons. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the Browns were unable to surpass their previous season’s 11-6 record.

Striving to return to the playoffs, the Browns aim to rekindle their past glory of the 1988 and 1989 seasons, during which they qualified for the playoffs in successive years. Their 2024 season also saw them seeking their first inter-division victory since 1989.

During the 2024 season, numerous coaching changes occurred within the Browns organization. Key figures such as Alex Van Pelt, Stump Mitchell, and T. C. McCartney were either released or saw their contracts terminated. Alex Van Pelt was serving as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, Stump Mitchell was the running backs coach, and T. C. McCartney was the tight ends coach. Furthermore, Bill Callahan, the offensive line coach, was released to take up a similar appointment with the Tennessee Titans. Ben Bloom, who worked as the team’s defensive line coach, also moved on a role with the Tennessee Titans.

However, the Browns quickly filled the vacancies with capable replacements. On January 24, Duce Staley joined the Browns as a running backs coach after working in the same position for Carolina Panthers in 2023. The following day, Tommy Rees was appointed as the team’s tight ends coach/pass game specialist. Previously, he was an offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Alabama in 2023. Later, Jacques Cesaire made his entrance as the Browns’ defensive line coach, after serving the Houston Texans in a similar capacity from 2022 to 2023. The Browns also hired Ken Dorsey as their offensive coordinator. Dorsey, a former starting quarterback for the Browns from 2006 to 2008, served the Buffalo Bills as an offensive coordinator from 2022 to 2023. The final staffing change came with the hiring of Andy Dickerson as their offensive line coach. Dickerson formerly served the Seattle Seahawks as an offensive line coach from 2022 to 2023.

Despite starting the season with a loss, the Browns rebounded with a win, making their record 1-1. However, in their subsequent games, the Browns fell short causing them to drop to 1-4. Following a string of losses, they finished with a disappointing 2-7 as they headed into their bye week.

A significant low point of the season was the major knee injury suffered by star running back Nick Chubb in the second week of the 2023 season. The loss of starting quarterback Deshaun Watson to a season-ending Achilles tear was equally painful. Despite this, backup quarterback Jameis Winston stepped up and was even named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

With the struggles the team faced, head coach Kevin Stefanski made the decision to hand over the play-calling responsibilities to Ken Dorsey moving forward. This gave the 2024 season not just a bittersweet aftertaste, but also sparked anticipation for the season to come. Through all its highs and lows, the Cleveland Browns’ 2024 season added a significant chapter to the team’s storied history.
