Chidi Njokuani is an American mixed martial artist and professional kickboxer who currently competes in the Bellator MMA Welterweight division. He was born on August 10, 1989 in Tijuana, Mexico to Nigerian parents. Chidi has two younger brothers; one of which also competes in MMA (Gaston).
Growing up, Chidi had a keen interest in combat sports and soon developed a passion for Muay Thai kickboxing. At the age of 16 he moved to San Diego to pursue his dream of becoming a professional fighter. It wasn’t long before he began training with some of the best coaches and fighters in the world. As his skills improved, so did his record as an amateur kickboxer; compiling several titles including International Kickboxing Federation United States Super Light Weight title, International Kickboxing Federation World Super Light Weight title and two times World Combat League Middleweight champion before turning pro at 18 years old.
During this same time period Chidi began competing as an amateur mixed martial artist with WFC (Warrior Fighting Challenge) where he quickly rose up their ranks with impressive performances against some top-level competition such as former UFC heavyweight Dave Hermann and current UFC middleweight Kevin Casey; both fights ending by submission via rear-naked choke due to Chidi’s superior grappling ability. In 2012 at only 22 years old it was time for him to make the switch from Amateur Mixed Martial Artist to Professional fighting full time under Strikeforce promotion where he went 3-2 against notable opponents such as Lorenz Larkin and Roger Gracie before signing with Bellator MMA promotion just prior to Strikeforce’s closing down that same year.
In 2014 during an interview Njokuani stated “I’m very excited about making my debut fight for Bellator this upcoming November 8th”. The excitement would indeed prove true on fight night when Chidi made short work out of Mike Bernhard via first round TKO victory earning himself Knockout of the Night honors signifying his arrival into one if not THE premier Mixed Martial Arts promotions today! Since then Chidi has gone 7-3 putting together impressive wins over names like Melvin Guillard, Thiago Jambo Alves and Hisaki Kato all while climbing steadily up through their rankings leaving many wondering what could be next for this talented Mexican/Nigerian rising star?
Whatever lies ahead we can be sure that fans will continue cheering on this great athlete every step along way!
