Joel Alvarez Bio

Joel Álvarez is a Spanish mixed martial artist from Gijón, Spain, who competes in the UFC’s welterweight division under the nickname “El Fenomeno.” The UFC lists him as active, training at Centro Deportivo Tíbet, and standing 6 feet 2 inches tall. He was born on March 2, 1993, and is listed as a striker, though his background also includes a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Álvarez turned professional in 2013 and made his UFC debut on February 23, 2019. After competing at lightweight for much of his UFC tenure, he moved to welterweight in October 2025. UFC coverage described the change as a long-term move motivated by the difficulty of his lightweight cuts. His style pairs long-range striking with a strong submission game; the UFC profile identifies the kimura as a favorite grappling technique and the hook as a favorite striking technique. The same profile notes that he has held an AFL lightweight title.
