Anthony Pettis is an American mixed martial artist and former UFC Lightweight Champion. During his career, he has fought in the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), Strikeforce, and UFC organizations. He currently competes for the Professional Fighters League (PFL).

Pettis was born on January 27th, 1987 in Milwaukee Wisconsin to Eugene and Annette Pettis. As a child he grew up training in taekwondo alongside his brother Sergio at the family-owned gym; however Anthony’s true passion was football. Originally a running back attending school at Dominican High School of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin; it wasn’t until later that he would pursue his dreams of becoming a professional fighter after being inspired by watching the MMA fights on television with his father Eugene.

Before Pettis signed up with World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), he sharpened his skills under the tutelage of kickboxing master and MMA trainer, Duke Roufus. Pettis also had a brief stint with The Ultimate Fighter where he learned valuable skills, although he didn’t make it to the show.

Pettis’ progression in the sport was steady. He successfully built a reputation as a smooth, technical fighter and won the WEC Lightweight Championship. However, due to a hand injury, his promotional debut against Anthony Njokuani, scheduled for WEC 40, was postponed.

From his debut at WEC 41, Pettis had a series of wins and setbacks. Despite suffering his first professional loss at WEC 45, he bounced back with a knockout win over Danny Castillo at WEC 47. Some of his defining bouts during this time include his fights with Rob McCullough, Alex Karalexis, and Shane Roller.

The merger of the WEC with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) catapulted Pettis into the global spotlight. Despite losing to Clay Guida on his UFC debut, Pettis took subsequent victories against contenders like Jeremy Stephens, Joe Lauzon, Donald Cerrone, and Gilbert Melendez during his tenure in UFC.

Following his loss to Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 185, Pettis decided to move down to the featherweight division. In spite of the initial glitches, he soon found his footing and rebuilt momentum in the new weight class.

In March 2019, Pettis made a comeback to welterweight after a decade to face Stephen Thompson at UFC on ESPN+ 6. He emerged victorious in a stunning knockout, earning a Performance of the Night award.

The following year, Pettis drop backed to the lightweight division where he took on Carlos Diego Ferreira at UFC 246.
