Tyler Coyle's Biography
Tyler Coyle had been dreaming of the National Football League (NFL) since his high school days at Windsor High School, where he showcased his versatility and excellence across multiple sports: football, track, and basketball. Born on November 15, 1998, the American professional safety footballer started showing prowess in his junior year with 28 receptions for 700 yards and 11 touchdowns that contributed to their win of the Class L-Small state championship. He continued to dominate in his senior year, recording 29 receptions, 741 yards, and 12 touchdowns which took his team to the Class L semifinals. His on-field performance earned him the prestigious accolades – First-team New Haven Register All-Star, inclusion in the All-Hartford Courant team and the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-Connecticut. His exemplary athleticism was also evidenced in his high school track career, during which he won six championship titles.
The journey of Coyle from high school to college was distinguished by his perseverance and determination. As a redshirt freshman, he embraced every opportunity, playing in all 12 games and starting in 9. He made a solid impact at the University of Connecticut (UConn) as he topped the team with two interceptions and emerged as a crucial player with 67 tackles. Coyle didn’t just defend but also showcased his attacking abilities by scoring his first academic touchdown against Temple with a 34-yard interception return.
In his sophomore year, he continued his relentless commitment with ten starts in twelve games. He topped the charts at UConn and stood fourth in the American Athletic Conference with 107 total tackles while displaying versatility as a kick returner. As a junior, he led the UConn defense with 86 total tackles in eleven games. He displayed his disruptive abilities with 3.5 tackles for loss (TFL), two forced fumbles, an interception that he returned for a spectacular 52-yard touchdown, and nine pass breakups.
After a noteworthy stint at UConn, Coyle made the decision to transfer for his final year. At Purdue as a graduate transfer, he played in three games where he made one pass defensed and racked up 13 total tackles. Despite going undrafted in the 2021 NFL draft, his impressive performance at Purdue’s pro day, running a 4.41 40-yard dash, prompted the Dallas Cowboys to give him a chance.
Even though the Cowboys waived him on August 31, 2021, his diligence paid off when he was re-signed the next day to join the practice squad. He finally got to make his NFL debut on December 2, 2021, playing 17 special-teams snaps against the New Orleans Saints. A reserve/future contract with the Cowboys was his reward on January 18, 2022. Coyle appeared in three games and made eight tackles with the Cowboys but was waived on August 30, 2022.
However, his career path took a turn when he signed with the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League (USFL). But due to the merger of the USFL with the XFL to form the UFL, Coyle was unfortunately rendered a free agent.
On January 1, 2024, Coyle started the year off on a positive note when he was signed to the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad. A reserve/future contract followed on January 22, 2024. Unfortunately, the stint proved to be brief, and he was released on August 14, 2024.
The wheel of fortune continued to turn for Coyle when two days later, he was signed by the Cleveland Browns on August 16, 2024. Despite the promising start, his stay there was even more short-lived as he was waived ten days later on August 26, 2024. Despite the fluctuating circumstances and continuous challenges, Tyler Coyle’s passion for the game remains unchanged, and his journey continues to inspire many young aspirants.
