Nico Collins's Biography
Dominique Stephon “Nico” Collins, or unceasingly known as Nico Collins, was born on March 19, 1999 and became notably recognized as a professional American football wide receiver for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). His energetic persona and unrivaled athletic prowess were first nurtured in his high school years at Clay-Chalkville High School located in Clay, Alabama. Distinguished as a wide receiver in high school, Nico’s immense potential was seen quite early on. As a junior, his extraordinary ability to catch 60 passes, covering a distance of 1,103 yards and secure 16 touchdowns, spoke volumes about the sportsman he was soon to become.
During his senior year, Nico cinched a total of 43 receptions totaling 865 yards and stamping his mark with 9 career-launching touchdowns. It was a highly competitive time in young Nico’s life as he was courted by several top football colleges, and in the end, he decided to commit to the University of Michigan, opting for it over Georgia and Alabama in February 2017.
Nico’s journey as a Michigan Wolverine began in 2017 when he enrolled at the University of Michigan. He made his first significant mark on October 12, 2017, when he made his first college reception on a 12-yard pass against Rutgers. Nico stood out during his freshman year, showcasing his potential by featuring in two games and recording three receptions covering 27 yards.
However, Nico’s true breakthrough season came during his sophomore year in 2018 when he proved his mettle by clinching the coveted Most Improved Offensive Player award. His impressive statistics for that season included making 38 receptions, covering 632 yards, and securing six touchdowns. Standout performances that year also include a display against Ohio State, where Nico secured four catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns.
On November 23, 2019, Nico scored another career highlight, recording a career-best of 165 receiving yards and three touchdowns against Indiana. Despite playing alongside celebrated teammates Donovan Peoples-Jones, Tarik Black, and Ronnie Bell, Nico’s athletic prowess was undisputed. He finished second among the team in receiving yards in 2019, amassing 37 receptions for 729 yards and seven touchdowns.
This impressive track record led Nico to be drafted 89th overall by the Houston Texans in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft. On May 12, he promptly signed with the Texans, showcasing his dedication by heading straight into his first training camp. Here, Collins was listed as a starting wide receiver, demonstrating his prowess alongside veterans Brandin Cooks and Chris Conley.
The energetic wide receiver made his NFL debut in the Texans’ Week 1 triumph over the Jacksonville Jaguars, recording one reception for seven yards. However, Collins’ journey on the field wasn’t always smooth sailing. He suffered an unexpected early exit during the Texans’ Week 2 loss to the Cleveland Browns due to a shoulder injury. Following the incident, Collins was placed on injured reserve on September 21. But undeterred by adversity, Collins showcased his tenacity, making a strong comeback on October 16, where he started for the Texans’ Week 6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Collins’ commendable rookie season saw him partake in 14 games (8 starts) and make 33 receptions for 446 yards and one touchdown. He gamely played in just over half of the Texans’ offensive snaps for the season. The following year, Collins established himself as the Texans No. 2 receiver behind Brandin Cooks and rounded off the season with 37 catches for 481 yards and two touchdowns.
After his return from season-ending injured reserve due to a foot injury, Collins displayed his versatility and skills in the following season. In what can only be described as a jolting performance against the Indianapolis Colts, Collins landed 146 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Although he’s had ups and downs throughout his career, Collins has proven to be a high-performing athlete, even exceeding his own records. He caught his first career touchdown during the Texans’ Week 16 victory against the Los Angeles Chargers, and in 2023, secured 80 receptions for 1,297 yards and eight touchdowns. Evidently, his performance stood out among his peers, as he placed 8th in the league in receiving yards and tied for 4th in receptions of 20 or more yards.
To reward the emerging star for his monumental performance and show confidence in his future contributions, Collins and the Texans agreed to a three-year contract extension on May 29, with a maximum worth of $75 million and $52 million guaranteed.
