KaVontae Turpin

Born on August 2, 1996, KaVontae Lamon Turpin is a prominent American football wide receiver and return specialist currently contracted with the esteemed Dallas Cowboys, a professional team in the well-regarded National Football League (NFL). He made his mark in football during his college years playing as a Horned Frog for Texas Christian University (TCU).

Hailing from Monroe, Louisiana, Turpin attended Neville High School where he first showcased his potential. As a senior, he achieved an impressive record of 1,928 all-purpose yards, including 904 rushing and 724 receiving, and scored 29 touchdowns. His performance earned him multiple accolades, including All-state, All-Northeast Louisiana, and All-NELA Big School Offensive Player of the Year honors. As a three-star recruit and the twelfth overall prospect in Louisiana, Turpin accepted TCU’s scholarship offer in 2015, declining an alternative offer from Texas Tech. Besides football, he also demonstrated his athletic prowess in basketball as a guard, averaging 12.9 points per game in his junior and senior years.

At TCU, Turpin made a strong start as a true freshman by starting in five out of thirteen games. His breakthrough performance came on October 5 when he posted a career-high with six receptions for 138 yards and four receiving touchdowns in a match against the University of Texas. The four touchdowns by a freshman were the highest in Big 12 history. Despite an injury in his seventh game that forced him to miss subsequent games, Turpin finished his freshman season with remarkable freshman school records, including 45 receptions and 649 receiving yards.

Throughout his college career, Turpin became a standout player, excelling despite being plagued with injuries on some occasions. In his sophomore year, he marked a spot in the national top five with both a punt return and a kickoff return for touchdowns. As a junior, Turpin registered 41 receptions and garnered 1,202 all-purpose yards. By his senior year, he had become TCU’s second-highest player in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns.

Despite potential and a successful college career, Turpin faced personal legal issues, including charges of domestic violence, which led to his dismissal from his college team and negatively impacted his professional football path.

Still, Turpin’s talent was not left unrecognized. After his college career, he held his Pro Day in 2019, achieving impressive stats, including a 40-yard dash time of 4.31 seconds. Despite going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, Turpin joined the Indoor Football League with the Frisco Fighters in 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic cut short the season before he could play.

In 2021, Turpin was picked by the FCF Glacier Boyz for their inaugural season. His performance was impressive, with 13 receptions for 223 yards and four receiving touchdowns in the six-game season. That same year, he also played for the Sea Lions of The Spring League, securing second place in the league.

Later that year, Turpin joined the Wrocław Panthers in the European League of Football as a replacement for the injured running back Mark Herndon. With the Panthers, he won three out of four regular-season games and registered 702 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns.

In 2022, Turpin was drafted by the New Jersey Generals in the revitalized USFL. He surpassed expectations, making 44 receptions and securing 921 all-purpose yards, earning the title of the inaugural USFL season’s Most Valuable Player.

Turpin’s career took a major leap when he signed a three-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL in mid-2022. His performance over the season was noteworthy. He scored two touchdowns in one game, aided in the Cowboys’ victory against the Los Angeles Chargers, and was named to the Pro Bowl. In September 2023, he achieved his first NFL touchdown against the New York Giants, contributing to a resounding 40-0 victory for the Cowboys.

On a personal note, Turpin welcomed his daughter Kaori Thomas-Turpin on July 27, 2023, with his girlfriend Khyjian Thomas. However, his life has been marred with legal troubles including a guilty plea to domestic violence charges, leading to his dismissal from TCU’s football program after a second offense in 2018. He then entered a plea agreement, which included two years of deferred adjudication probation and completion of an abuse intervention program.

Despite these tribulations, Turpin continues to demonstrate his innate football talent and has carved a thriving professional career in the sport.
