BIOGRAPHY
Born on May 16, 1994, Caelan Kamuela, professionally known as “Kamu” Grugier-Hill, is best recognized for his outstanding career as a professional American football linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). Today, he is lauded as a formidable part of the Minnesota Vikings team, but his journey stretches far beyond his current team and is marked with multiple triumphs and a few hurdles.
Grugier-Hill’s football journey began at the Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu, Hawaii. He became an active part of the school’s football scene during his junior year, where he showcased his potential as a competent safety and a skillful punter. From these humble beginnings, an incredible football career began to unfold.
In 2012, Grugier-Hill’s athletic prowess earned him a spot on the Eastern Illinois Panthers football team, a position he held until 2015. Amidst the many accolades he received during his time with the Panthers, his First-team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors for 2014 and 2015 stand out. However, his college career also had its unfavorable moments, such as when he punched a Minnesota lineman in the groin, which made him the first player to be ejected for the 2014 season.
Upon graduating college, Grugier-Hill was signed by the New England Patriots following the 2016 NFL draft. While this was a significant stepping stone, the Patriots waived him as part of their final roster cuts the same year. Undeterred, he accepted a waiver from the Philadelphia Eagles a day later. His time with the Eagles marked several professional milestones, including his first career tackle, his first Super Bowl ring following their victory against the Patriots, and his first career interception, which was a result of outsmarting the New York Giants quarterback, Eli Manning.
However, in December 2019, Grugier-Hill’s career faced a potential setback after being diagnosed with a lower lumbar disc herniation. After a period of recovery, he continued his professional career by signing a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins in March 2020. This move reunited him with Head coach Brian Flores who was previously the linebackers coach for the Patriots.
In 2021, Grugier-Hill took his talents to Texas, signing another one-year contract with the Houston Texans. During his time with the Texans, he made a strong impact, setting a franchise record for the most tackles in a single game, with 19 tackles against the Indianapolis Colts. Despite this impressive feat, Grugier-Hill requested to be released from the Texans in October 2022.
After leaving the Texans, Kamu was subsequently taken up by the Arizona Cardinals in November and later joined the Carolina Panthers in April 2023. During his stint with the Panthers, Grugier-Hill further proved his worth, recording 56 tackles, a sack, and an interception.
Having played for the Patriots, Eagles, Dolphins, Texans, Cardinals, and Panthers, Grugier-Hill brings with him a wealth of NFL experience. On March 20, 2024, his journey led him to the Minnesota Vikings, where he continues to build upon an impressive football career. From his roots as a high school safety and punter to a recognized star in the NFL, Grugier-Hill’s life and football career is nothing short of inspiring. His grit, determination, and talent have propelled him to the heights of professional football, where he continues to inspire and awe millions of fans.
