Joe Andreessen's Biography

Born on February 7, 2000, Joseph Andreessen is a celebrated American professional footballer, well-known for his stints as the linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). Currently, he represents the Buffalo Bills, a reputed football team that has greatly impacted his journey and sporting career. Prior to this, he had a significant college football career, initially playing for the Bryant Bulldogs and later, for the Buffalo Bulls. Andreessen’s style of play, natural talent, and dedication to the sport stand as testimonies to his prominence in the field of professional football.

A native of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area, Andreessen was virtually born into the game. His exposure to football started in his early years when he joined the little league football squad. His growing attraction and dedication towards the sport led him to play for Lancaster High School. During his time at Lancaster, Andreessen was celebrated for his unparalleled work ethic. He demonstrated remarkable endurance and consistency, earning significant favor from his coaches and teammates. He was awarded the Defensive Player of the Year given his exceptional performance in Western New York, a milestone in his football journey.

On the completion of high school, Andreessen secured a football scholarship from Bryant University, making it the sole educational institution to extend such an offer. He, later on in his college years, transferred to the University at Buffalo as a graduate transfer due to his strong hometown connections. During his last year at Bryant, his performance sparked a wealth of attention. He earned an All-American title, setting an unbroken school record with 112 tackles, ranking him 8th in FCS in 2022, and standing third in terms of career tackles in Bryant Bulldogs history.

Andreessen’s journey with the Buffalo Bills commenced in a rather unexpected way. Following the 2024 NFL Draft, where he went undrafted, his hometown team, the Buffalo Bills, offered him an opportunity to join the team on May 11, 2024, after he showcased impressive form during a rookie minicamp tryout. His consistent performance paid off when he was given a chance to start during the second game of preseason. This came about due to injuries and precautions taken for Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard, respectively. Against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he put up an exceptional performance, impressively finishing with a team-high 12 tackles, inclusive of two tackles for loss, one of which was Justin Fields’s fourth-down sack.

His excellent performance did not go unnoticed. Quarterback Josh Allen fondly nicknamed Andreessen as “Buffalo Joe,” directly connecting him with his Buffalo roots and paying homage to his local upbringing. His commendable preseason performance earned him a spot in the NFL’s “All Preseason team”. Subsequently, Andreessen made it to the Bills’ initial 53-man roster, alongside his fellow University at Buffalo alumni Ja’Marcus Ingram- serving as a testimony to his skills and exceptional talent on the field.

Andreessen wears the jersey number 44, a number that has historically been issued only sparsely, owing to its reservation in honor of Elbert Dubenion, a key player in the Bills’ American Football League era. The number, usually used only in the preseason and granted to players not expected to make a regular season roster, is a symbol of history and importance. This makes Andreessen’s journey, right from his high school football days to entering the Buffalo Bills team, a truly remarkable and inspirational one.
