Damien Harris's Biography

Born on February 11, 1997, Damien Harris is a former professional football player who played as a running back in American Football’s most prestigious league – the National Football League (NFL). He is best known as an essential contributor on the field for the New England Patriots and later the Buffalo Bills.

Hailing from Berea, Kentucky, Harris’s athletic talent began to shine during his time at Madison Southern High School. He made a name for himself in high school football, rushing for a staggering 6,748 yards with 122 touchdowns. Harris’s exceptional abilities on the football field were recognized by Rivals.com, a prominent recruiting network, which rated him as a five-star recruit. In the ranking of high school footballers, Harris was placed as the top running back and, impressively, the eighth best out of all players in his class.

Following a successful high school career, Harris committed to continue his athletic journey at the University of Alabama. Here, he suited up for the Alabama Crimson Tide under the esteemed guidance of head coach Nick Saban. In 2015, the year of his college football debut, Harris acted as a backup to future NFL player Derrick Henry. The following year, upon Henry’s NFL departure, Harris took his place as Alabama’s starting running back, showcasing his skill and vigour in a stunning debut where he rushed 138 yards on only nine carries against USC.

After a decorated college career, which included two national championships, Harris received his professional calling. He was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft, marking the start of his professional career. Harris’s professional debut came about in the Patriots’ Week 7 victory over the New York Jets, in which he rushed for 12 yards on four carries.

However, the following year in September 2020, the star running back suffered a broken finger, leaving him on the injured list for some time. Upon his return in October, he made amazing strides, notably against the Kansas City Chiefs, where he achieved 100 rushing yards on 17 carries.

Throughout his tenure with the Patriots, Harris earned several career highs. In his 2021 season, despite some injury-related setbacks, he accomplished a career-high sprint of 929 rushing yards in a single season. However, his 2022 season was less successful due to injury issues, contributing 462 rushing yards overall.

In March 2023, Harris introduced a new chapter in his career by signing a one-year, $1.7 million contract with the Buffalo Bills. Although his time with the Bills was short-lived due to a severe neck injury, he celebrates scoring his first touchdown as a Bill against the Las Vegas Raiders.

On March 25, 2024, following an illustrious career dotted with remarkable feats, Harris retired from professional football. His announcement came via a post on Instagram, marking the end of an incredible journey in the world of American football.
